On Saturday, October 28, 2017 at approximately 12:30 p.m., the Riley County Police Department received a call concerning the discovery of a deceased person in rural southern Riley County. When officers arrived on scene, they located a deceased middle-aged white female, identified as Carrie Alicia Jones, 48, of Junction City. Initial investigation revealed Jones was the victim of an apparent homicide. The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as the investigation progresses. Updated Wednesday morning: The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the Ellis Heights Neighborhood at Fort Riley in Geary County. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. The Riley County Police Department is investigating battery involving Manhattan High School football players, according to a press release from the RCPD and a report from the Manhattan Mercury Friday afternoon. The RCPD said it was made aware of an incident involving “several juveniles” Friday morning and is in the process of filing a battery report from the information it received. Authorities say the battery happened Thursday in the 3300 block of Robinson Drive in Manhattan, which is where Bishop Stadium is located in CiCo Park. LAWRENCE — Experts are saying the Kansas economy is heavily dependent on global free trade and immigrant labor at a time when both are considered charged political issues in the U.S. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the University of Kansas’ Institute for Policy and Social Research sponsored the annual Kansas Economic Policy Conference on Thursday. TOPEKA — A Democratic leader wants the Kansas Legislature to have independent attorneys investigate sexual harassment allegations. Minority Leader Jim Ward also promised Thursday that fellow Democrats in the Kansas House will undergo training on sexual harassment at a December retreat. And Ward pledged that he’ll be willing to remove committee assignments from any House Democrat found to have committed sexual harassment. WASHINGTON — The Republican-led Senate Foreign Relations Committee narrowly approved the nomination of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback to be U.S. ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom. On an 11-10 vote Thursday, the panel recommended that the full Senate consider President Donald Trump’s selection of Brownback for the State Department post. October sales tax reports show $940,404 collected in Manhattan, which continues to be down from last year’s $970,635 collected. The number is well above October 2015 numbers though of $892,303. And  the net budget impact for the month indicates a positive of $34,670–which is better than last month’s negative budget impact number. A reminder October sales tax reports reflect retail sales in August. City of Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen says “total receipts from the City’s one-cent sales tax continues to remain flat and behind budget – but manageable.”
