John S. Kolasheski, the division’s outgoing deputy commanding general for maneuver, in a Victory with Honors Ceremony at 10 a.m. May 12 at the “Big Red One” headquarters building. Kolasheski assumed duties as the deputy commanding general in June, 2015. He previously served as deputy chief of staff, strategic communications, for Resolute Support/Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)/Operation Enduring Freedom with duty in Kabul, Afghanistan from 2014 to 2015. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A suspect in the shooting death of a Kansas police detective is facing more charges. Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome Gorman scheduled a news conference Wednesday to announce charges against 28-year-old Curtis Ayers, of Tonganoxie, Kansas. Ayers is suspected in the killing of Kansas City, Kansas, Detective Brad Lancaster, who died at a hospital Monday about three hours after being shot during a confrontation near a racetrack. Kansas authorities have alleged Ayers fled in Lancaster’s car, then carjacked another vehicle with two children inside. He is accused of abandoning that vehicle, leaving the children unharmed, and…

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A man charged in the slaying of a Wichita couple during a robbery has pleaded guilty. The Wichita Eagle reports that 21-year-old Steven Wade Edwards II pleaded guilty to several charges, including two counts of first-degree murder. The bodies of 70-year-old Martha Moreno and her husband, 72-year-old Godofredo Moreno, were found by their son in their home on Oct. 16, 2014. Police say the couple died of gunshot wounds. Edwards faces a life sentence for the murder charges, and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 21. A 17-year-old has also been charged in the killings.

NEWTON, Kan. (AP) The Newton City Commission has voted to fire the city manager, effective immediately. The Hutchinson News reports the vote Tuesday was 3-2 to fire City Manager Randy Riggs, who had held the position since March 2008. The city hasn’t said why Riggs was fired other than a desire by the commission to pursue a different direction in management of the community. The city says in a news release that Rigs will receive more than $215,000 upon departure, including severance of roughly $147,000 and health insurance benefits, unused vacation and unused sick leave. On May 10, 2016 at approximately 3:25 PM police arrested Julie Kenfield, 44, of Leonardville, Kansas while in the 100 block of Courthouse Plaza in Manhattan. Officers arrested Kenfield on a warrant for the offense of failure to appear which originated in Ness County, Kansas. This warrant had “no bond” and caused Kenfield to be confined at the Riley County Jail at the time of this report. Updated 10 a.m. 5/11/2016 Blue Township Fire Department responded to a rollover accident at approximately 10:38 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the intersection of Highway 13 and Carnahan Creek Road in Pottawatomie County.
