The Riley County Police Department is asking for the public’s help in a sexual battery case reported in a neighborhood near the Kansas State University campus this past Sunday. As previously announced, a 20-year-old woman was sleeping in her home when an unknown suspect came in without permission and sexually assaulted her. The suspect in this case is described as a white male in his early 20s, average build. He was wearing a dark colored shirt, jeans, tennis shoes and dark rimmed glasses. Bonnie Rush has been named interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University, effective immediately. Rush, who is currently serving as acting dean, will continue to lead the college while a national search is conducted to find a new dean. “As a longtime faculty member, former department head, and as the college’s executive associate dean, I know Dr. Rush understands the specific needs of the College of Veterinary Medicine, and I appreciate her willingness to serve in this important position,” Mason said. A Grandview Plaza man originally charged with attempted murder has entered a plea to rape and aggravated battery charges.  Luis Caicedo-Mosquera entered the plea the end of last week in Geary County District Court. Caicedo-Mosquera was arrested in August of 2016 after Junction City Police and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the Budget Host Motel at 820 South Washington Street in Junction City. At that time authorities found Karlie Jones, 19, of Wichita who received a single stab wound to the chest. Caicedo-Mosquera was identified as the suspect and later located. The Manhattan City Commission reviewed the latest from the City’s Water and Wastewater Facilities Plan Update Project, Tuesday evening. Commissioners also discussed the results of a Risk and Vulnerability Assessment, which calls for emergency power improvements to the City’s water treatment plant. A new power generator will be installed by next summer as Assistant Project Manager, Garrett Sheehan with Carollo Engineers explained. “That 2,000 kW generator will run, 60-70 percent of the plant, so we can get by with some reduced usage.” Going forward, the Commission will be faced with the challenge of financing a potential expansion of the City’s…

A former Chapman basketball coach has been sentenced to more than five years with the Kansas Department of Corrections and lifetime post release supervision for two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. Mark Snider of Abilene, who had been the basketball and track coach for the USD 473 Chapman School District, was arrested last year on five counts of electronic solicitation and five counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child under 16. The divisions in 4A are no more and the Backyard Brawl between the Wamego and Rock Creek football teams will continue. The Kansas State High School Activities Association released 2018-19 classifications Tuesday and both the Red Raiders and Mustangs will be in 3A. Last year, Wamego was classified as 4A Division I, while Rock Creek was designated as 4A Division II. Junction City Police are reporting an injury accident involving a Junction City High School Cross Country team member. The name of the female member of the team injured has not yet been released.  A news release from JCPD Tuesday indicates the accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Monday at the intersection of 5th and Eisenhower in Junction City. When emergency crews arrived, the victim was located with minor injuries. She was transported to Geary Community Hospital where she was treated and released. The driver of the vehicle was cited for Failure to Yield to Pedestrian in a Crosswalk.

WICHITA — The latest government update on Kansas crops shows progress on winter wheat seeding is lagging behind usual for this time of year. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 14 percent of the next year’s crop has now been planted. Normally by this time, Kansas growers have seeded 20 percent of their crop. The agency says about 3 percent of the wheat has now emerged. Corn harvest is also going slower than usual for this late in the season. The agency reports that 29 percent has been cut. Riley County commissioners approved $275,000 in spending Monday morning for equipment and infrastructure improvements. The board voted 3-0 to approve the purchase of a tandem axle truck with plow and spreader valued at $190,000 for the public works department, a 3/4 ton 4×4 pickup with snowplow valued at $35,000 for the noxious weed department and $50,000 in initial funding for landscaping enhancements to Courthouse Plaza. The monies come out of the county’s Capital Improvement Projects fund — often referred as the CIP fund. Commissioners agreed to revisit other items in the county’s CIP list later this fall.
