WICHITA — National Weather Service branches in Wichita and Tulsa, Oklahoma, are re-enacting a deadly 1991 tornado outbreak on social media a week after the threat of nasty weather forced them to postpone a similar exercise. The Wichita Eagle reports the Wichita office will focus on conditions leading to an F5 tornado that killed 17 people and injured more than 200 in Andover, south Wichita and McConnell Air Force Base on April 26, 1991. WICHITA — A Kansas anti-abortion activist is facing trial in federal court this week over a letter she sent to a Wichita physician saying someone might place an explosive under the doctor’s car. Opening statements are expected Tuesday in the government’s civil lawsuit against anti-abortion activist Angel Dillard under a federal law aimed at protecting access to abortion services. Jurors must decide whether the letter constitutes a “true threat.” The defense has argued the letter was constitutionally protected speech. Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Branden Ross, 21, of Grand View Plaza, Kansas on Monday. Ross was arrested for the offenses of criminal trespass, possession of opiates, opium, or narcotic drugs, use of possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia and criminal possession of a weapon. Police made contact with Ross in the 1100 block of Yuma Street after reports of subjects being present at a residence they were not welcomed in. The Royals returned home from a 1-5 road trip to begin a series against the Washington Nationals in Kansas City. Gio Gonzalez and the Nationals bullpen combined for a five hit, 2-0 shut out victory over the Royals. Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy drove in the only runs in the first inning. Results on a proposed $22.5 million bond issue for USD 378 school improvements are expected Tuesday night. Riley County clerk Rich Vargo told county commissioners Monday morning his office has already received 105 advance votes so far from advanced voting, which closed Monday at noon. Polls will open Tuesday at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. Vargo expects the results to be fully reported sometime around 9 p.m. “That’s dependent on when the supervising judges bring in the results from their polling places,” Vargo told the commission. More subdivision bid openings and road updates at Monday’s Pottawatomie County Commission meeting. Construction projects continue in Pottawatomie County on two major areas–including highway 24 and Excel as well as Highway 24 and Flush Road. TOPEKA — Kansas is reporting that its tax collections last month were $2.6 million more than expected, giving state officials a small dose of good news in dealing with ongoing budget problems. The Department of Revenue reported Monday that the state collected $584.3 million in taxes in April, when the official projection was $581.7 million. The surplus was 0.5 percent. That’s positive news but revenue projections were slashed only three weeks ago. The tax collections are now being pegged against a more pessimistic forecast.
