In 2015 Riley county was able to proudly hold the title of “healthiest county in Kansas,” unfortunately, that is no longer the case. A March study by the Kansas Health Institute ranked the county 14th in overall health. Jenna Fiscus, Health Educator with the Riley County Health Department, shared the numbers at Monday’s Riley County Commission Meeting. Fiscus said the county may have not deteriorated in actual health, but other counties may have gotten better. Cameron Marshall, an eighth grader at Anthony Middle School, won first place overall for Division II (4th to 8th grade) out of roughly 120 projects at the Kansas State Science and Engineering Fair that was held in El Dorado on April 1 & 2.  This top State prize came with $300 and $100 in gift certificates for his science teacher to buy supplies from PITSCO education. K-State Police identified a student found dead on campus Saturday. Police have identified the victim as 25-year-old Jacob Horton, freshman in education. The campus police department was notified of a possible deceased person in a parking lot on the Manhattan campus, Saturday morning. Upon arrival, officers found Horton in a vehicle deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Office of Student Life and Counseling Services are offering counseling and assistance to students and employees affected by the student’s death.

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A Kansas City, Kan., man was sentenced Monday to 12 years in federal prison for his part in a drug trafficking organization that is alleged to have distributed large amounts of methamphetamine, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. Joshua Thomas Alvarez, 26, Kansas City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. In his plea, he admitted that in July 2012 the FBI identified a major drug trafficking ring operating in Kansas City, Kan. PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) Developers of a southeast Kansas casino say a Shawnee County judge’s ruling clears the way for construction of the state’s fourth nontribal casino to begin. Judge Larry Hendricks last week rejected arguments made in a challenge to a decision by the state to award the southeast Kansas project to Kansas Crossing Casino and Hotel. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports the $70 million proposal in Crawford County was the smallest of three submitted to the state Gaming Facility Review Board. GARDEN PLAIN, Kan. (AP) Shrinking farm incomes are putting pressure on Kansas farm co-ops to merge as a way to help producers cut their costs. The Wichita Eagle reports that Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Garden Plain will vote in about six weeks on whether to merge with co-ops in Anthony and Kiowa. Andale Farmers Co-Op voted in December to merge with Kanza Co-op in the Pratt County town of Iuka.
