TOPEKA — Kansas legislators worry about exhausting operating funds now that their annual session is among the longest in state history. But they don’t have a definitive answer for when the money runs out. Wednesday was the 103rd day of what was supposed to be a 100-day session. Republican legislative leaders had said the Legislature would exhaust its funds for the session Friday and not be able to pay lawmakers. The largest animal vaccine company in China announced Wednesday that it will open a research lab and offices in the Kansas State University Office Park, located on the north side of campus. Officials for Jinyu Bio-technology Co., LTD, said that this is the first time that the company has established facilities in the United States, according to this press release from KSU. Four police departments teamed together to make a substantial drug bust Tuesday. According to a press release sent from the Riley County Police Department Wednesday morning, members of the RCPD’s Special Investigation Unit partnered with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Waterville Police Department and Blue Rapids Police Department to serve a search warrant in Waterville. The search warrant was the result of an ongoing investigation, and led to the seizure of approximately half a pound of methamphetamine along with sizable amounts of marijuana, oxycodone, and oxycontin. Wamego Police were involved in an aggravated kidnapping and burglary investigation early Tuesday, with an arrest made.  David Rojas, 31, was taken into custody in the 1800 block of Marsha Lane in Wamego following the incident, which originally involved a report of shots fired in the 300 block of Chestnut Street. A news release from Wamego Police chief Michael Baker indicates officers and deputies arrived in the area of the report shortly before 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, and found a residence struck by gun fire. TOPEKA — The Kansas Senate has rejected a proposal to restrict lobbying of the Legislature by public school districts as it debates a bill that would increase the state’s spending on education. Republican Sen. Dennis Pyle of Hiawatha offered the proposal as amendment to a bill that would phase in an increase in education funding of about $230 million over two years. The Senate voted 23-17 against his proposal. It would have prevented school districts or school officials from using state dollars to lobby the Legislature. The Manhattan Fire Department was busy late Tuesday morning extinguishing a house fire at 122 Kopp Drive. Crews were dispatched to the one-story home shortly at 11:04 a.m., where they found smoke and flames venting from a rear window. Eighteen firefighters entered the home and contained the fire in fifteen minutes.  A juvenile occupant of the structure was home at the time of the fire and was able to exit without injury before arrival of fire crews. The residence received an estimated loss of $75,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents. ELG Enterprises LLC of Little River, Kansas, owns the property.…

TOPEKA — A Kansas legislative leader says negotiations between the National Rifle Association and the University of Kansas Health System are delaying debate on a bill aimed at keeping concealed guns out of public hospitals. Senate Majority Leader Jim Denning said Tuesday that GOP leaders are waiting to see whether the talks result in a compromise before the Senate considers the bill. A 2013 law requires public health facilities to allow concealed guns into their buildings starting in July unless the buildings have security such as metal detectors or guards.
