Four Manhattan Firefighters were part of a large group recognized Wednesday by Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, Lt. Governor Jeff Colyer, and Adjutant General Lee Tafanelli in a ceremony honoring Hurricane Harvey first responders. Men and women from 16 state and local agencies who traveled to Texas to aid in Hurricane Harvey rescue and recovery efforts were recognized jointly. Boats that were taken to Texas for the search and rescue mission were be on display on south apron of the capitol as well.

Riley County police officers responded to a rollover Wednesday afternoon on Ehlers Road in Manhattan. Miraculously, there were no serious injuries reported. Public Information Officer Hali Rowland told KMAN no transport was required. It appeared to be a single-vehicle accident.

TOPEKA — Gov. Sam Brownback says a U.S. Senate committee hearing is set for next week on his nomination for ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom. But Brownback told reporters Wednesday he’s not sure how quickly the Senate could vote on his nomination after the Oct. 4 hearing by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. President Donald Trump nominated the two-term Republican governor for the ambassadorship in late July. Brownback said he’ll step down as governor when the Senate confirms him. A Kansas Department of Corrections Inmate serving time on a Pottawatomie County aggravated indecent liberties conviction has been discharged.  Zachary Manor, 32, was released from the KDOC last Friday. Manor was sentenced in Pottawatomie County in early 2010 for an aggravated indecent liberties case occurring Christma Day 2008. He had been at the El Dorado KDOC facility since March of this year.

The Riley County Police Department is asking for the public’s help in a sexual battery case reported in a neighborhood near the Kansas State University campus this past Sunday. As previously announced, a 20-year-old woman was sleeping in her home when an unknown suspect came in without permission and sexually assaulted her. The suspect in this case is described as a white male in his early 20s, average build. He was wearing a dark colored shirt, jeans, tennis shoes and dark rimmed glasses. Bonnie Rush has been named interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University, effective immediately. Rush, who is currently serving as acting dean, will continue to lead the college while a national search is conducted to find a new dean. “As a longtime faculty member, former department head, and as the college’s executive associate dean, I know Dr. Rush understands the specific needs of the College of Veterinary Medicine, and I appreciate her willingness to serve in this important position,” Mason said. A Grandview Plaza man originally charged with attempted murder has entered a plea to rape and aggravated battery charges.  Luis Caicedo-Mosquera entered the plea the end of last week in Geary County District Court. Caicedo-Mosquera was arrested in August of 2016 after Junction City Police and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the Budget Host Motel at 820 South Washington Street in Junction City. At that time authorities found Karlie Jones, 19, of Wichita who received a single stab wound to the chest. Caicedo-Mosquera was identified as the suspect and later located. The Manhattan City Commission reviewed the latest from the City’s Water and Wastewater Facilities Plan Update Project, Tuesday evening. Commissioners also discussed the results of a Risk and Vulnerability Assessment, which calls for emergency power improvements to the City’s water treatment plant. A new power generator will be installed by next summer as Assistant Project Manager, Garrett Sheehan with Carollo Engineers explained. “That 2,000 kW generator will run, 60-70 percent of the plant, so we can get by with some reduced usage.” Going forward, the Commission will be faced with the challenge of financing a potential expansion of the City’s…

A former Chapman basketball coach has been sentenced to more than five years with the Kansas Department of Corrections and lifetime post release supervision for two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. Mark Snider of Abilene, who had been the basketball and track coach for the USD 473 Chapman School District, was arrested last year on five counts of electronic solicitation and five counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child under 16.
