Update- 9:00 AM: The road was closed for roughly two hours as emergency crews responded to the scene of the accident. The KHP released the names and status of the individuals involved Friday night. The driver of a Honda Civic, named Rachel Ryan of Overland Park hit the bicyclist in the right southbound lane. A Junction City man was sentenced today to more than 15 years in prison for child sex crimes, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said. Samuel L. Merced, 35, was sentenced in Geary County District Court by Judge Maritza Segarra to 185 months to be served in the Kansas Department of Corrections. Merced was convicted by a jury in October 2015 of two counts of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child and one count of lewd and lascivious behavior. To accommodate more patients and visitors during the new phase of construction, beginning March 21, the Main Entrance to Via Christi Hospital will remain open until 10 p.m. A volunteer will be present at the Admissions Desk inside the Main Entrance to assist patients and visitors who arrive between 7 and 10 p.m. This change in access is a result of the ongoing construction taking place in the Emergency Room area. ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) An Arkansas City woman has been found guilty in connection to the death of her 16-month-old daughter. KAKE-TV (http://bit.ly/1pxJmcv ) reports that Lindsey Abegg pleaded guilty to aggravated endangerment of a child in the August 2015 death of Astra Abegg. She also pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine and marijuana. Police say that Astra Abegg was found dead at an Arkansas City apartment when emergency crews responded to a report of a medical emergency involving a child. The cause of the child’s death has not been released.

TOPEKA– Parks officials are taking steps to protect a pair of eagles and their babies who are nesting at a lake just east of Topeka. Shawnee County workers with the help of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism placed two buoys this week in Lake Shawnee. A Manhattan man faces a rape charge following his arrest earlier this week. According to Friday morning’s Riley County Police activity report,   Andrew Rieschick, 20,  was taken into custody by the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office on an arrest warrant for the offense of rape Tuesday afternoon. Rieschick’s bond was set at $20,000. The rain is likely welcome after a grass fire Thursday evening caused quite a bit of damage in the 11,000 block of Anderson Avenue. Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins tells KMAN the fire started when the hose on a pump quit while Brad White was conducting a planned burn at about  6 p.m. Collins adds about 70 acres and one garage building full of collectables were destroyed, with the blaze threatening 3 other buildings. 28 volunteer firefighters, 14 fire trucks and a backhoe were on the scene to get the fire extinguished. The fire chief indicates it was after midnight before the fire…

Wamego’s USD 320 Superintendent Denise O’Dea has resigned her position–and will be taking over as Superintendent of Washington County Schools’ USD 108. Day’s resignation is effective June 30th. She has served nearly five years in the Wamego position. O’Dea indicated she wanted the opportunity to seve in a district in which her rancher husband lives.
