A Silver Lake man was sentenced Thursday to eight months with the Department of Corrections but granted immediate probation for 18 months in connection with an aggravated battery while DUI case from October of 2014. Cameron Renfro was ordered to pay costs and restitution and to serve 30 days of house arrest/jail. Pottawatomie County Attorney Sherri Schuck indicates the victim and his family were supportive of the sentencing. Renfro entered a plea of guilty to the charge last month in Pottawatomie County Court. A 19-year-old Junction City man who originally faced charges in connection with a residential burglary involving the theft of several guns now faces a new aggravated indecent liberties case involving a 14-year-old. Darian White had a status hearing Thursday in Geary County Court. White’s defense attorney withdrew and White is now set for a status March 22nd with his new attorney. The latest case resulted from the residential burglary investigation, according to Michelle Brown with the Geary County Attorney’s office. Riley County Police have released the results of a recent school zone enforcement operation. As previously announced, from February 29th to March 13th Law Enforcement agencies across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma participated in a traffic safety operation to reduce teen driver related fatal collisions. In 2015, 13 teens lost their lives due to car crashes in Kansas; 40% of those teens were not properly restrained. In an effort to change this trend, the Riley County Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol participated in the tristate safety operation by focusing their efforts on traffic violations within school zones. A partnership between Fort Riley and the Riley County Police Department could be on the horizon. RCPD Director, Brad Schoen discussed the potential partnership with Riley County Commissioners during a Thursday morning meeting. The partnership would see a police training facility added to an undeveloped range on the military base, pending further research Schoen says the partnership is the apparent result of federal legislation, that encourages military bases to use their assets in ways that help their communities.

TOPEKA– A measure designed to protect hunting, fishing and trapping in Kansas faces a final legislative vote that will determine whether it goes on the ballot in November. The Senate planned to take final action Thursday on a proposal to add a new provision to the state constitution’s Bill of Rights declaring that people have a right to hunt, fish and trap. It would also declare that public hunting and fishing are “a preferred means of managing and controlling wildlife.” The House overwhelmingly approved the proposed constitutional change last month. OTTAWA– Expert witnesses in the capital murder trial of an eastern Kansan man are testifying about how three adults and a toddler died. A forensic pathologist who performed the autopsies and a forensic entomology expert who examined maggots were among the witnesses called this week to testify in the trial of Kyle Flack. The 30-year-old Ottawa man is charged with capital murder in the deaths of 21-year-old Kaylie Bailey and her 18-month-old daughter, Lana, in spring 2013. TOPEKA– The House Appropriations Committee’s chairman is pushing a school funding plan even though he acknowledges that he doesn’t much like it. Rep. Ron Ryckman Jr. of Olathe told fellow House Republicans during a caucus Thursday that his goal is to prevent the Kansas Supreme Court from shutting down the state’s public schools. The court ruled last month that the state has been shorting poor school districts on their fair share of state aid that now totals more than $4 billion annually. A Junction City man faces a total of 34 counts involving child pornography following his arrest Thursday.  Dale Holvorson, 49, was charged with 14 counts of distribution of child pornography and 20 counts of possession of child porn after the Junction City Police Department, with the assistance of the Kansas Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Wichita Police Department, served a search warrant in the 1400 block of West 11th Street in Junction City. TOPEKA — A Republican state senator is suggesting that Kansas move to consolidate public school districts as it works to make education funding fairer. Sen. Steve Fitzgerald of Leavenworth raised the issue Wednesday during a committee hearing on a bill to redistribute $39 million during the 2016-17 school year to help poor districts. The bill is a response to a Kansas Supreme Court ruling last month that the state has been unfairly shorting poor school districts on their aid.
