Manhattan officials returned on Wednesday night from the National League of Cities conference held in Washington D.C. Manhattan mayor Usha Reddi said that the four-person contingent, which also involved City Commissioner Karen McCulloh, City Manager Ron Fehr, and Asst. City Manager Kiel Mangus, attended several sessions concerning affairs in Manhattan and other similar cities. “[We] talked about the importance of military in our community and how to make them stronger,” Reddi said. An Ogden man was sentenced to more than two years in connection with a residential burglary in Pottawatomie County.  David Huffman, 35, was sentenced Thursday in Pottawatomie County District Court to 27 months, with the sentence to run consecutive to a Riley County sentence he’s already serving time on. Huffman was arrested last May on the Pottawatomie County warrant, which originally listed several theft and burglary charges. He entered a guilty plea in January to residential burglary and making false information. An injury accident occurred in the 600 block of Scenic Dr yesterday at approximately 8:50 AM. When officers arrived, they found that a green GMC Terrain, driven by 36-year-old Lindsey Leborgne of Junction City,  left the roadway and went airborne, striking a gold Toyota Camry, being driven by 73-year-old Mary Hughes of Manhattan, before landing on it’s drivers side in a ditch. Leborgne was transferred to Via Christi for treatment was also issued a notice to appear for improper driving on a laned roadway. Manhattan Boxer, Jake Johnson will be competing this Saturday in San Antonio, Texas in a National Amputee Boxing Association event. This will be Johnson’s first boxing match. The 36-year-old has been training for one and half years in the sport, hoping for the opportunity to compete. He is a member of the KSU Boxing Club and will be competing for the KO Boxing Team, out of Manhattan. A U.S. District Court Judge, Tuesday, denied K-State’s motion to dismiss Title IX violations cited in two ongoing federal lawsuits against the university. The suits were filed in April by former KSU students Sara Weckhorst and Tessa Farmer. Both accused that K-State failed to diligently address their claims of sexual assault and rape by male fraternity members who also attended the university. Since the beginning and in court documents, K-State has asserted off-campus rapes or sexual assaults wouldn’t be investigated by the university, citing its lack of jurisdiction. PITTSBURG — Pittsburg residents have approved a $31 million bond issue that will be used to expand the district’s six schools. Unofficial results show the bond issued passed Tuesday in a special election by a 1,542-641 margin. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports funds from the bond will be used for projects such as heating and air conditioning and renovating the cafeteria and band rooms at Pittsburg High School. Several science classrooms at the high school will be upgraded. Other projects include adding rooms at elementary schools and expanding the gymnasium at the middle school. TOPEKA — The Kansas House unanimously passed a sales tax exemption for supplies and services to repair or construct fencing for agricultural land. The bill passed Tuesday by the House is in response to fires that burned hundreds of thousands of acres in Kansas last week. The fires destroyed miles of fencing on ranches and farms, mostly in Comanche and Clark counties. The Wichita Eagle reports the legislation exempts from sales tax goods and services purchased to help repair or rebuild fencing. The House gave the bill early and final approval Tuesday.
