TOPEKA — A Kansas legislator is standing by a comment he made in a letter comparing Planned Parenthood with a Nazi concentration camp. Republican state Sen. Steve Fitzgerald of Leavenworth told The Kansas City Star on Monday that he considers Planned Parenthood worse than the Nazi regime in Germany. Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards called Fitzgerald’s comments disturbing and said he should be ashamed. Fitzgerald is a strong abortion opponent. LAWRENCE — Kansas congresswoman Lynn Jenkins has been booed and faced shouts of “Do Your Job!” as she defends a Republican plan for overhauling health care. The five-term Republican congresswoman had a raucous town hall meeting Monday in Lawrence reminiscent of recent events in which GOP lawmakers in other states have been booed and jeered. About 300 people attended the Jenkins event in perhaps the most liberal community in her eastern Kansas district. A new Chief Operations Officer has been selected by USD 475. The school district announced Tuesday David Wild of Milford was chosen for the position. Wild will start on June 1, pending approval from the education board. Wild will take over for departing COO William Clark. TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has signed a final disaster declaration covering 20 counties following last week’s wildfires that burned more than 1,000 square miles of the state. Brownback signed the declaration Monday. He made an initial disaster declaration verbally on March 5, and the final document covers fires that started March 4. One death and 11 injuries were attributed to the fires. The state said Monday that more than 40 homes and an unknown number of outbuildings were destroyed. Two Colorado men were arrested in Manhattan on several charges. A pair of 23-year-olds, Igor Chernenko, of Denver, and Roman Puzey of Brighton, Colorado, were both arrested in the 1100 block of N. 10th St. on Monday night at 11:30 PM. The two men were arrested and charged with stalking, criminal damage to property, and conspiracy. Both men are currently being held on bonds of $6,000 apiece. In the past month, officers with the Riley County Police Department have taken multiple reports of aggravated burglaries in the areas near Aggieville where a suspect walked into an occupied residence and took items. In some instances, the suspect was confronted by residents before leaving. In 2 instances, females reported being assaulted by the suspect.
