WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Unusually warm and dry weather in February is stoking fears of another drought. The Wichita Eagle reports the average temperature this month in Wichita has been more than 8 degrees above normal, with more upper 60s and low 70s expected this week. The forecast calls for a good chance of rain Sunday night and early Monday. Forecasters say Sunday’s rain figures to be the most since mid-January. Moderate to severe drought currently grips most of the western third of the state. Abnormally dry conditions are reported in Sumner and Butler counties. AUSTIN, Texas  — D.J. Johnson tipped in a miss by Kamau Stokes with 1.6 seconds left, then made a free throw to send Kansas State to a 64-61 win over Texas on Saturday that snapped the Wildcats’ three-game losing streak. The award was announced during the Manhattan Chamber’s Annual Meeting on Friday, Feb. 17, at Manhattan Conference Center. A former staffer for U.S. representative Todd Tiarht was convicted of sodomy earlier this week.  A bench trial was held for Jase Stanton on Wednesday. Stanton was convicted of one count of criminal sodomy. Sentencing is set for February 27, 2017, in Div. II court at the Riley County Courthouse. Stanton, who has been registered as a sex offender since 2009, was arrested after being accused of sexually assaulting two men in June of 2015 in Manhattan. Beginning Monday February 20th through March 5th the Riley County Police Department will join other Law Enforcement agencies in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma participating in the annual “High Visibility Seat Belt Enforcement Campaign” around area high schools. This initiative is coupled with the Seatbelts Are For Everyone (SAFE) program in Kansas high schools.  The Junction City Fire Department responded to an apartment fire at 115 West Spruce St. in Junction City on Thursday. Crews found a fire in the attic of the nine-unit apartment building. They pulled the ceiling down, and used roughly one-thousand gallons of water to extinguish the fire. According to a press release from JCFD, extensive damage occurred in three of the units, while all nine had substantial smoke damage. One occupant was transported to Geary Community Hospital for difficulty breathing two hours after the fire was reported.
