MANHATTAN, Kansas, December, 7, 2016 – The structure fire that occurred at 422 Vattier Street on Monday afternoon December 5, 2016, has been determined to be incendiary by fire investigators. Investigators from the Manhattan Fire Department, the Riley County Police Department, and the Kansas Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) conducted the origin and cause investigation. A Kansas Department of Corrections inmate serving time for nearly 25 years on Geary County charges of first degree murder and kidnapping has apparently been passed over for parole.  Jason Turner, 46, had been up for consideration with September public comment sessions, but KDOC indicates on its website just this past week he’s now not eligible for release until 2021. Turner was sentenced in 1992 in connection with murder and kidnapping cases in September of 1991. He has been held at Ellsworth Correctional Facility since 2006.

Wamego City Commission meeting notes December 6, 2016 The Wamego City Commission opened the meeting with a Public Hearing to approve the Budget Amendment.  At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page stated the original purpose of the Budget Amendment was to authorize the funds for the new Fire Truck purchase, which was not programmed in the original budget.   Page said they included the Library, the Library Employee Benefits and CVB Board end-of-year expenditures into this hearing.  With no opposition, a motion was made and approved by a vote of 4 to 0.  Commissioner Robert Morse was not present. A few arrests of note Tuesday with the Junction City Police Department. A Junction City man, Daniel Pettigrew, 33, was arrested on a variety of charges including aggravated battery, rape, and kidnapping.  Pettigrew was arrested at the Junction City Police Department. Natasha Cliff, 30, of Junction City, was also arrested for aggravated arson and aggravated burglary. Roosevelt McCoy Jr., 26, of Junction City, and Marcella Rhyne, 24, also of Junction City, were arrested for the sale or distribution of hallucinogens as well as felony possession of drug paraphernalia. Commissioners discussed the rezoning of an area on the West Side of Manhattan for the purpose of building a new Genesis Health Club location. The proposed building will be a two-story, 48,000 sq. foot building, complete with a pool, three tennis courts, a basketball court, and a jogging track. Mayor Usha Reddi expressed some concern over the demolition of trees to build the health club, citing that Manhattan residents value green space in their city, but overall, was in approval of the project. DERBY, Kan. (AP) A 17-year-old transgender student who advocated for LGBTQ rights at a suburban Wichita high school was crowned king of a winter formal at the school. The Wichita Eagle reports Tyler Krayer received the most votes from classmates for Holly Ball King at the school’s annual event Saturday night. Krayer, a senior, says he at first thought it was a joke when he found out a month ago that a classmate nominated him. And he says he was surprised to win the honor. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A Reno County judge has temporarily blocked a South Hutchinson business from reselling a pair of machines that purport to assist in body healing amid an ongoing legal dispute. The Hutchinson News reports that the temporary restraining order issued last week also prohibits Greg Dovel and his company, Energy Genesis of Kansas, from revealing confidential information about the machines. The order comes in a lawsuit filed by Beaver Creek LLC, which says it sold the machines to Dovel for $40,000 each. The suit alleges Dovel agreed to buy 12 machines and later indicated he would sell the…

A 72-year-old Kansas Department of Corrections inmate serving time on Riley County rape and aggravated kidnapping convictions is up for public comment sessions and possible parole. Nordell Glover was sentenced in connection with the 1986 case the next year. Public comment sessions are set for February 15th in Derby, February 24th in topeka, and the 27th in Kansas City. Letters may also be sent to the Prisoner Review Board with the KDOC in Topeka. The parole hearing for Glover will be held in March with the earliest possible release date in April.
