Two men have been arrested in connection with a rural Havensville burglary. Eric Howard, 46, and Robert Shutts, 43, both of Topeka, were taken into custody following the investigation of an early Monday morning burglary in the 16,000 block of Highway 63 in rural Havensville. According to Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat Deputies William Cline and Chandler Imhof were checking the residential property as the address had recently been burglarized and the deputies were providing extra patrol. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Authorities from several agencies are investigating a higher-than-expected number of arson fires in Topeka. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that 57 blazes have been intentionally set this year. That’s about 21 more than a city of Topeka’s size would expect. Topeka Fire Marshal Mike Martin says many of the arsons have occurred in an area about two miles west of the Statehouse. No one has been injured in the recent arson fires, though they have caused thousands of dollars in damage to trash bins, garages and houses. ABILENE, Kan. (AP) A Union Pacific train has derailed near a grain elevator in Abilene. Union Pacific spokeswoman Calli Hite says the derailment happened at 3:50 p.m. on Monday. No injuries were reported. Hite says the train was headed into customer facility when the 10 empty cars derailed and broke a power pole. The cause of the derailment is under investigation. According to Hite, train cars that derailed on private property will be righted by the property owner. The Salina Journal reports that Union Pacific’s main line was cleared and reopened by about 8 p.m.

SALINA, Kan. (AP) An official says two tornadoes that recently touched down in eastern Saline County caused an estimated $500,000 in damage. The Salina Journal reports that Emergency Management director Hannah Stambaugh told county commissioners about the costs during their regular meeting on Tuesday. An EF2 tornado touched down Oct. 6 just before 4:15 p.m. and stayed on the ground for a short distance. An EF3 tornado touched down near the town of Kipp around 4:20 p.m. that day, and traveled on the ground for 6.3 miles. Updated 11:54 a.m. — ALL LANES ARE BACK OPEN ON PILLSBURY DR (HWY K-177) One person was injured in the two vehicle accident on K-177 on the south edge of Manhattan that blocked most of the highway for several hours Wednesday morning.  Charles Schumacher, 54, of Maple Hill was taken to Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan following the accident, reported at 6:30 a.m. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Schumacher was driving a 2012 Ford F-350 northbound on K-177, with a 2013 Freightliner semi driven by Troy Higgs, 24, of Missouri backing up across the highway. Officers responded to the intersection of N. 14th Street and Laramie Street in Manhattan yesterday for a report of an injury traffic collision.  The collision report indicates that a white 2008 Suzuki GSX Motorcycle, driven by 19-year-old Jacob Balzer, of Hays, struck a black 2014 Ford Focus, driven by 25-year-old Manhattan woman Samantha Migliacco. This collision occurred as the Ford Focus turned left in front of the motorcycle. Balzer was transported to Via Christi Hospital for the treatment of a serious injury. A 27-year old Manhattan man was arrested Monday night.  Dustin Ingram was arrested around 8:20 PM on a warrant for aggravated battery with a bond of $10,000. This warrant stemmed from an incident in August. An Ogden man was also arrested in Manhattan on Monday night. 38-year-old Evan Megaw was arrested for probation violation stemming from an original charge of conspiracy to commit theft. Megaw is being held on a $5,000 bond. RCPD arrested 36-year-old Manhattan resident Michael Agnew early Tuesday morning. Agnew was arrested for two counts of failure to appear. The Manhattan Fire Department responded at 5:31 p.m. Tuesday for a chemical spill at the Biosecurity Research Institute, housed in Pat Roberts Hall on the Kansas State University Manhattan campus. The spill was determined to be contained in the room where it occurred as designed, and no injuries were reported. Manhattan Fire Department personnel left the scene at 6:05 p.m. Kansas State University staff continue clean up and will investigate to determine cause of the spill.

While K-State may be looking at ways to move the university closer to its’ 2025 goal, the Manhattan City Commission is looking at ways to keep the traffic flowing on the north side of campus in Manhattan. On Wednesday the city commission held a work session where they heard from city employees, K-State administration, and three different architects regarding a plan to beautify north campus while changing traffic and improving safety. WICHITA — Fall harvest has made some good progress in Kansas this past week amid dry conditions and warm temperatures. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 87 percent of the state’s corn crop has been cut. That is near average compared to a year ago at this time. Kansas farmers have also harvested about 56 percent of the sorghum and 53 percent of the soybeans in the state. Sunflower harvest is 38 percent completed, while 8 percent of the cotton crop has been harvested in Kansas. The agency also reports that winter wheat planting is now 84 percent…
