A Manhattan man faces a probation violation charge following his arrest Monday night. Charles Champion, 43, of Manhattan was taken into custody at approximately 9:42 PM while in the 1300 block of Laramie Street in Manhattan. Champion was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for Probation Violation, with the original charge listed as Criminal Threat. More than 20 soldiers with the 541st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade, are set to return soon from a nine-month deployment to Kuwait. While deployed, the battalion’s Soldiers were responsible for planning, oversight and resources for troops in five countries and 11 locations. The battalion supported Operations Spartan Shield and Inherent Resolve. The unit departed Fort Riley in mid-March. All members of the “Pacesetters” battalion are expected to be home in time for the holiday season.

NEWTON — A south-central Kansas police department is trying to utilize analytical software to help its officers patrol more effectively and lower the city’s high crime rate. The Wichita Eagle reports that the predictive policing software calculates where crimes are likely to happen after being fed crime reports and other statistics. But Newton Police Department Lt. Bryan Hall says it has been difficult for the department to use the fully potential of the technology because it is short-staffed, and most of the officers do not have time to do preventive police work. GARDEN CITY — Authorities say an off-duty western Kansas deputy has shot and wounded a 23-year-old man. Sheriff Kevin Bascue said in a news release that the shooting happened Sunday night when deputies were sent to assist a suicidal man in northeast Finney County. The Hutchinson News reports that the deputies were told that an off-duty deputy who lives in the area would be responding because neighbors had contacted him. The off-duty deputy arrived in his personal vehicle and was approached on foot by the man, who was carrying a gun. The release says the deputy fired two shots from his handgun,…

Pottawatomie County Commission Chair Pat Weixelman likens it to a badminton match–but expressed frustration with a supplemental contract approved after considerable discussion at Monday’s meeting. A couple of different design/engineering firms have been involved in the Highway 24/Excel Road project that has been dragging on for nearly 12 years. Pottawatomie County Register of Deeds, Betty Abitz filed for re-election Monday. “I’ve been in the office for around 22 years and I love my job,” Abitz said, “the staff I have is wonderful.” Abitz has witnessed big changes in the county over the years. “Our county is growing, and we have so many more documents than we ever have that it keeps everybody busy in the office, which keeps it exciting.” Abitz said she very much appreciates the opportunity to serve Pottawatomie County and would to continue her work with another term.
