WASHINGTON — Kansas ranks 39th in the country in funding programs to prevent kids from smoking and help smokers quit, according to a national report released today by a coalition of public health organizations. Kansas is spending $946,671 this year on tobacco prevention and cessation programs, which is just 3.4 percent of the $27.9 million recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In contrast, tobacco companies spend an estimated $82.6 million to market their products in Kansas each year. A Manhattan man faces probation violation after his arrest Monday. Michael Combs, 38, was taken into custody while at the Riley County Police Department. He was arrested and given a bond of $10,000 for the offense of probation violation which was listed on a warrant from Riley County. The original offense attached to this warrant was motion to revoke probation of parole for sexual exploitation of a child. Combs was sentenced in 2013 to nearly three years with the Kansas Department of Corrections, but granted probation, on a conviction involving sexual exploitation of a child. ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Former Miss Kansas and the host of an Outdoor Channel adventure show has been charged with illegally shooting an Alaska grizzly bear and attempting to cover it up. Alaska State Troopers say 25-year-old Theresa Vail, star of “Limitless with Theresa Vail,” and two hunting guides are charged with misdemeanors. Vail has been a guest on KMAN several times and lives in Manhattan. Troopers say Vail during filming in May shot a male grizzly, and in her haste to kill it, shot a nearby sow. A Junction City man was sentenced Monday to 30 years in federal prison for trafficking cocaine in Junction City and Manhattan, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a press release Monday afternoon. Albert Dwayne Banks, 33, of Junction, City, was convicted on counts that included conspiracy to distribute more than 280 grams of crack cocaine. Last month, Banks was sentenced to life. At Monday’s hearing, U.S. District Judge Daniel D. Crabtree corrected the sentence by reducing it to 30 years. Vehicle thefts were a problem in November for Riley County. Riley County Police Department Lt. Pottawatomie County Attorney Sherri Schuck has filed for re-election. County Clerk Nancy McCarter indicates the incumbent filed Monday for the position. Schuck has been with the Pottawatomie County Attorney’s office since 2002 and had worked with the Riley County Police Department prior to that. Schuck told KMAN Tuesday morning that her personal ties to the county compelled her to run again. She told KMAN Tuesday she’s running again because it’s the job she’s always wanted to do and because she has the experience the job calls for. Schuck adds recent and upcoming cases are too important for her to ignore.
