The joint meeting of the city commission and parks and recreation advisory board was originally scheduled for April 26, but was cancelled when severe weather rolled into Manhattan. The Royals returned home from a 1-5 road trip to begin a series against the Washington Nationals in Kansas City. Gio Gonzalez and the Nationals bullpen combined for a five hit, 2-0 shut out victory over the Royals. Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy drove in the only runs in the first inning. The Royals offense went a combined 5 for 31 with four singles and one double. Edinson Volquez (3-2) suffered the loss allowing seven hits and two runs in over seven plus innings. Results on a proposed $22.5 million bond issue for USD 378 school improvements are expected Tuesday night. Riley County clerk Rich Vargo told county commissioners Monday morning his office has already received 105 advance votes so far from advanced voting, which closed Monday at noon. Polls will open Tuesday at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. Vargo expects the results to be fully reported sometime around 9 p.m. “That’s dependent on when the supervising judges bring in the results from their polling places,” Vargo told the commission. More subdivision bid openings and road updates at Monday’s Pottawatomie County Commission meeting. Construction projects continue in Pottawatomie County on two major areas–including highway 24 and Excel as well as Highway 24 and Flush Road. Public Works Director Peter Clark updated commissioners on the highway 24/Excel Road Project saying the re-enforced concrete box on the north side of Highway 24 is built and back-filling is being done, with a grade being established. Clark adds the large ditch associated with the project  is also closer to being completed. TOPEKA — Kansas is reporting that its tax collections last month were $2.6 million more than expected, giving state officials a small dose of good news in dealing with ongoing budget problems. The Department of Revenue reported Monday that the state collected $584.3 million in taxes in April, when the official projection was $581.7 million. The surplus was 0.5 percent. That’s positive news but revenue projections were slashed only three weeks ago. The tax collections are now being pegged against a more pessimistic forecast. TOPEKA — Kansas legislators tackled issued that included abortion and preventing cities and counties from regulating artery-clogging restaurant meals or sugary snacks as the worked on balancing the state’s next budget. Legislators passed and sent Gov. Sam Brownback multiple other measures Sunday before adjourning early Monday morning. ANTI-ABORTION MEASURES Two anti-abortion proposals won approval from legislators. They’re likely to become law: Brownback is a strong abortion opponent who has signed every piece of anti-abortion legislation sent to him since he took office in January 2011. TOPEKA — The Kansas Legislature is out of session until June 1, and its leaders hope lawmakers have finished their business for the year. The House adjourned shortly after 1 a.m. Monday, and the Senate followed at about 3:30 a.m. Their session June 1 is supposed to be only a brief adjournment ceremony. But the Kansas Supreme Court is reviewing changes lawmakers made in March to how the state distributes more than $4 billion a year in aid to its 286 school districts. On May 1, 2016 at approximately 2:05 PM officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Dewuan Shorter, 21, of Manhattan on a warrant for the offenses of aggravated robbery (X2) and robbery. He was also arrested on the offenses of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery as well as use of possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia. He was given a bond of $15,000.00 and at the time of this report was confined at the Riley County Jail.
