Four people were transported to the hospital Sunday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash on Fort Riley Boulevard. Riley County Police say officers responded around 2:44 p.m. Dec. 28 to the area of mile marker 185. A 2009 Nissan Frontier driven by 44-year-old Heather Cunningham of Manhattan and a 2014 Toyota Tundra driven by 62-year-old Stephen Gerard of Manhattan collided. Cunningham was transported to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Seth Child Road and Fort Riley Blvd. Upon arrival, officers found a Dodge Ram 2500 driven by Jesus Porras-Sandoval, 27, of Manhattan, struck a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 driven by Anthony Capobianco, 27, of Ogden. A Florida man was taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon after his pickup struck ice and collided with a semi on I-70 in Riley County. KHP officers filed a report of an injury accident at 2:51 p.m. on Sunday, on Interstate Highway 70 just west of Dry Creek Road. The Geary County Sheriff’s Office handled three separate wildlife-related crashes over the weekend. The first incident occurred at 8:43 p.m. on Dec. 27 along K-177 near mile marker 83. Deputies say Douglas Ackerman of Manhattan was traveling north in a 2010 Mercury Milan when a deer entered the roadway. Ackerman struck the deer, causing heavy damage to the vehicle. No injuries were reported, and the vehicle was removed by the owner. A second crash was reported at 9:28 p.m. the same evening on K-57 near mile marker 6. A 24-year coaching veteran who has 13 years of coordinator experience, Jeremiah Johnson has been hired as a defensive backs coach at Kansas State, head coach Collin Klein announced Wednesday. The Geary County Rural Fire Department responded Sunday morning to a grass fire that was initially reported as possibly threatening a nearby structure with animals inside. The call came in around 8:18 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters were able to contain the blaze to two wood piles and prevent it from spreading to any buildings. No injuries or structural losses were reported. Fire officials are urging residents to recheck any recent burns from the past week. Newly elected city officials will take their seats in January, but for some, the new year will mean the end of the road. John Matta is retiring from local politics after 15 years of service overall.
