The Sentinel Homeowners with houses built on ground leased from the City of Council Grove around the city-owned lake, are being threatened with having their leases canceled unless they pay $25,000 and agree to the land being annexed. While the city owns the lake — which is a few miles outside the city limits — it remains part of Morris County and has not been annexed. According to resident Ryan McDonald, when the leases were redrawn around 2012, the sorts of homes built around the lake shifted from fishing cabins to more expensive houses. Cesilio Martinez Gonzalez, 30, of Manhattan, was arrested on November 25, 2024, at approximately 4:15 PM in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road. Martinez Gonzalez was arrested on the probable cause offenses of interference with an LEO, failure to appear, identity theft, perjury, and interference with the judicial process. Total bond was set at $21,500. Martinez Gonzalez was confined at the time of this report.

A Manhattan man was scammed Friday after he was sold a mobile home and never received ownership. Riley County Police Officers filed a report of theft by deception around 8:30 p.m. and listed a 42-year-old man as the victim after he purchased a mobile home from a person known to him and never received access to the trailer. The total loss associated with the theft is $3,500.
