OKLAHOMA CITY — State and federal regulators say 32 disposal wells in northeastern Oklahoma must shut down because they are too near a newly discovered fault line that produced the state’s strongest earthquake on record. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission said Monday that 27 wells under its jurisdiction would cease operations, along with five wells in Osage County, which is covered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rules. A magnitude 5.8 quake at Pawnee, Oklahoma, on Sept. 3 shook several states, including Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. OLATHE — One of the four men charged with first-degree-murder in the killing of a suburban Kansas City gun store owner is arguing that he acted in self-defense. The Kansas City Star reports that De’Anthony Wiley, of Kansas City, Missouri, says he was wounded and had tried to surrender when 44-year-old Jon Bieker was fatally shot while defending his wife. She suffered minor injuries during the January 2015 robbery at the couple’s Shawnee, Kansas, store. Video of the fatal shooting was shown Monday during a hearing in Johnson County District Court. A Louisville man was arrested by Riley County Police on Monday. Mark Hecker, 21, was arrested on warrants for failure to appear and probation violation. Hecker was released to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department. In a separate incident, police arrested 46-year old Wendy Montgomery for charges including criminal possession of a weapon and possession of depressants. Bond was set at $8,000.

Wamego’s USD 320 Board of Education has a shortage of bus drivers.  At Monday’s meeting, Larry Hannan, transporation director, presented the problem of not being able to support some of the smaller activity trips because of the shortage.  His alternative solution was the purchase of a Type A 14 passenger school bus, which does not require a CDL license to operate.  After justifying the purchase and discussion, a motion was made to authorize the purchase of a Type A miniature bus at a cost not to exceed $54,000.  Superintendent Tim Winter said the funds are available for the purchase.  Approval was…

GREAT BEND — Authorities in Great Bend are investigating after the front doors of the school district building were shot out when the building was unoccupied. Barton County Sheriff Brian J. Bellendir said Monday that deputies responded to an alarm call at the USD 428 administrative offices late Sunday night. Deputies found that the front doors to the building had been shot repeatedly with a handgun, causing more than $6,000 in damage. No one was in the office at the time, and no injuries were reported. OLATHE — A man has been arrested in the death of a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy after crashing into his stopped patrol car. Overland Park Police spokesman, Officer John Lacy, says the 38-year-old suspect is jailed on suspicion of reckless second-degree murder in the death of Master Deputy Brandon Collins. The crash happened Sunday after the 45-year-old Collins stopped a driver for a traffic infraction on U.S. 69. Lacy says Collins had made contact with the driver and returned to his vehicle when it was rear-ended. Collins died at the scene. No one else was hurt. Lacy says the suspect fled on…
