SALINA — A central Kansas man will have to serve at least 50 years in prison after being convicted in the death of a 17-year-old girl. The Salina Journal reports Macio D. Palacio Jr. was sentenced Friday to life in prison in the 2015 death of Allie Saum. His sentence requires that he serve a minimum of 50 years before he’s eligible for parole. He was convicted earlier of first-degree, premeditated murder in Saum’s fatal shooting. Saum was struck and killed when Palacio fired into a truck she was riding in. WICHITA — Crews in Wichita have been searching for a man who was reported missing while kayaking in the Arkansas River. The Wichita Eagle reports that Wichita Fire Department crews spent Saturday searching for the man, identified as 24-year-old Brian Bergkamp, a native of Garden Plain. He had been scheduled to enter his third year of theology study at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He was reported missing Saturday when the Arkansas River was swollen by recent rains. Fire officials say two men and three women in separate kayaks were floating on the river Saturday when they hit churning water.…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Star has apologized for a guest column about women reducing the risk of rape by not drinking too much, saying the column “should never have been published.” In the apology, Publisher Tony Berg said the newspaper removed the column, which was written by Laura Herrick and titled “Women can take action to prevent rapes,” after it was published on the website Friday and in the newspaper Saturday. EUREKA — Officials say the southeastern Kansas town of Eureka has been hit by a tornado that has caused significant widespread damage. The National Weather Service says a tornado warning for Greenwood County was issued just after 9:00 p.m. The tornado hit Eureka around 9:45 p.m. Greenwood County Emergency Management Director Levi Vinson confirmed at 12:30 a.m. that there were no reports of injuries or deaths. PHILLIPSBURG — Law enforcement authorities are investigating after an inmate escaped from a northern Kansas jail. Phillips County Sheriff Paul Wisinger says 18-year-old Trent Ludwig of Hayward, Wisconsin, was being held at the county jail on misdemeanor drug charges and other local charges when he escaped Thursday evening. Wisinger told The Hays Post that a deputy was supervising inmates cleaning the facility when other inmates were outside on a break. He says Ludwig took off while the other inmates were returning to the jail. The Kansas Highway Patrol is also involved in the search for Ludwig.

  A joint investigation by the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, Wamego Police Department and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks resulted in the arrest of two men this past week. According to a Thursday evening news release from Sheriff Greg Riat, the two males who were driving a 2004 Chevy Silverado Pickup were stopped near Horseshoe Road on Military Trail Rd in  rural Wamego around 3:40 p.m last Friday (July 1).
