At approximately 8:45 a.m. Thursday, Patrol units from the Junction City Police Department and EMS from the Junction City Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of Washington and 18th streets in reference to an injury accident involving a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 2012 Toyota Camry. The operator of the motorcycle, identified as Benjamin Locke, a 40 year old solider from Ft. Riley was transported from the scene to the Geary Community Hospital, where upon arrival he was declared deceased from his injuries. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Outgoing Riley County Health Department director Brenda Nickel said her goodbyes and thanked her colleagues during Thursday morning’s county commission meeting. Nickel, as KMAN first reported in October, announced her resignation to take a newly-created risk management director position with the Flint Hills Community Health Center in Emporia, which is a federally-qualified health center. Lisa Ross, the health department’s WIC supervisor, will serve as the interim director. The 20 newest Kansas Highway Patrol troopers took their oath of office Thursday and received their badges during a graduation ceremony for KHP Recruit Class #55. The graduation concludes the recruits’ 23 weeks of training. KHP Recruit Class #55 began their training at the Patrol’s Troop J (Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy) in Salina in July. After graduation, the new troopers will take residence in their assigned counties, and will begin the field training with a veteran trooper in their assigned area. LAWRENCE — A University of Kansas information session about guns on campus has drawn a crowd of more than 200 students, faculty and staff. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the University Senate organized Tuesday’s event. Under state law, public universities in Kansas must allow concealed weapons on campus beginning July 1, 2017. But policies that will guide implementation of the law have yet to be written. Kaleb Thomas was last seen at 2013 Bellview Apartment E in Topeka, wearing a white shirt, gray/white cammo pants, and a gray beanie top. WICHITA- A third person has been charged in connection with a double homicide outside a Wichita home last week. The Wichita Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/21R5BZm ) that 19-year-old Jonathan Carter is charged with first-degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon in the deaths of 55-year-old Betty Ann Holloman and 24-year-old Brenton Oliver. Jail records say he was arrested around 11 a.m. Tuesday. Twenty-four-year-old Brent Carter and 19-year-old Jamion Wimbley have also been charged in the case after their arrests Friday. WICHITA- Police are investigating a man’s death at a Wichita home. Wichita police Sgt. Brian Bachman says officers found a 42-year-old man dead Wednesday night when they went to the home to check on the welfare of an individual. KWCH-TV (http://bit.ly/1mcFxaI ) reports that the death is being investigated as suspicious. The name of the victim wasn’t immediately released. Bachman says police are investigating the scene.
