Woodrow Wilson Elementary is celebrating a century of educating Manhattan students. The Manhattan Mercury reports that the school will host an open house Thursday evening commemorating 100 years of teaching and learning. The open house will include a public viewing of the school’s new gymnasium and storm shelter and will also include food trucks, old photos of the school through the years and a chance for former students to celebrate in some of the nostalgia. A Manhattan woman is facing new charges of aggravated assault and criminal possesson of a weapon. The Riley County Police Department says 20-year-old Ladaisha Ransom was arrested at the jail Tuesday morning on the aformentioned charges. An online criminal complaint also alleges an attempted aggravated robbery charge, stemming from April 22. Ransom also was arrested April 30 for violating terms of her probation and was charged April 4 with drug distribution charges. RCPD says Ransom remains jailed on a total $30,000 bond.

Ladaisha Ransom, 20, of Manhattan, was arrested on May 7, 2024, at approximately 9:45 AM in the 100 block of S. Seth Child Road.  Ransom was arrested on probable cause offenses of criminal possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated assault.  Total bond in this matter was set at $30,000. Ransom was confined at the time of this report. Two motorcyclists sustained injuries Tuesday evening after a crash on US-77 in Geary County. The Sheriff’s Office says Austin Davis, of Manhattan, was northbound on the highway near mile marker 157. While he was turning into a convenience store, his bike was struck by Tristan Baca, of Fort Riley. Both riders were transported to Stormont Vail for treatment of currently unspecified injuries.

Malik Peters, 27, of Manhattan was arrested on May 6, 2024, at approximately 4:25 PM in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road. Peters was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for forgery x3, computer unlawful acts, and theft of property or services. Total bond was set at $15,000. Peters was not confined at the time of this report. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers. Pottawatomie County officials provided an update at Monday’s county commission meeting regarding the cleanup and recovery from the April 30 tornado in Westmoreland. Public Works Director Tim Eisenbarth spoke to the county commissioners, who met in Wamego, regarding the work done so far and what to expect moving ahead. Noxious Weed Director and Westmoreland Mayor Mark Jack said he was thankful to report that in spite of damage to the building, the chemicals stored inside were spared. By Megan Moser, The Mercury Riley County commissioners on Monday heard 2025 budget and appropriation requests from several agencies. Riley County Historical Museum Director Katharine Hensler requested just under $492,000, down from last year’s ask of over $497,000. According to a memo, the capital outlay request is the same as it was for the 2024 budget, and request for contractual services and commodities is down. Downtown Manhattan director Gina Snyder asked the county to allocate $5,000 to support the entity’s beautification efforts in the business district.
