The Wamego City Commission reviewed the counties needs assessment. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page introduced Debbie Nuss, Project Coordinator for the Riley County Senior’s Service Center. Page said he’d heard the presentation of the Pottawatomie County Community Needs Assessment at an earlier meeting, and asked Nuss to present the information to the Commission. According to Nuss, the Community Needs Assessment was conducted through Wichita State University for Riley County in 2013, and because there is some overlap, Pottawatomie County was included. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Republican Gov. Sam Brownback has named three new members to the Kansas Board of Regents and one is from Manhattan. Brownback on Tuesday announced his appointments of Dennis Mullin of Manhattan, David Murfin of Wichita and Daniel Thomas of Mission Hills to the nine-member board that oversees higher education. They were appointed to four-year terms. Mullin is chairman and CEO of Steel and Pipe Supply Co., and Thomas is a dentist. The Riley County Police Department was able to identify subjects wanted for questioning in recent burglaries, with one of the three arrested in Topeka. Pierce Vogler, was identified and charged with burglary, with bond set at $10,000. The Riley County Police Department has also reportedly issued two warrants following Vogler’s arrest including one for Conner Goss-Griffin, 24, who is wanted for aggravated burglary and two counts of burglary of a motor vehicle. Heavy rainfall in the region throughout the past couple months has lake and river levels up, but Operations Project Manager Brian McNulty of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assured Manhattan city commissioners Tuesday night in City Hall that a lot of water would still need to enter Tuttle Creek Lake for any repeat of the 1993 flood. McNulty said the elevation of the lake is just over 1,109 feet, or 34 feet above normal. A Manhattan man found guilty a few months ago by a Riley County Jury on several drug-related charges has been sentenced to 142 months with the Kansas Department of Corrections. Eric Lipp was sentenced Monday, with 136 months for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. An additional six months was added since the jury found Lipp used a firearm in furtherance of the drug offenses. Sentences on other charges, which included possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, drug paraphernalia, and criminal possession of a firearm are to run concurrently.
