Riley County Police will soon be stepping up traffic safety efforts in area school zones. Beginning on February 29th and ending March 13th, officers will join Law Enforcement agencies across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma in a traffic safety operation, working to reduce teen driver related fatalities and collisions. To try and alter this trend, law enforcement across these states will be increasing vigilance when patrolling area schools zones – taking appropriate action with drivers and passengers who refuse to obey traffic laws. Lauren Hess, 25, of Manhattan was arrested while in the 600 block of Poyntz Ave. on February 17, 2016 at approximately 1:00 PM. This arrest came after police received reports of a vehicle that was not operating safely and had been involved in a collision with a curb. This tip led to the arrest which included the offenses of driving while under the influence, endangering a child, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident. RCPD confirmed that an infant child was inside the vehicle at the time of this incident. Hess was given a bond of $2,500.00…
A Manhattan man was injured in a two vehicle accident on I-70 in Wabaunsee County Wednesday night. Collin Wood, 22, was taken to Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan following the accident, reported at about 8:30 p.m., 1.5 miles east of K-99. The Kansas Highway Patrol indicates Wood was westbound in a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup when his vehicle collided with a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria disabled in the right lane and unoccupied. Wood’s pickup left the roadway and entered the north ditch. Wood was wearing a seat belt.
Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 school board members heard several new and continuing reports throughout their meeting Wednesday evening. Dr. Mike Ribble, the district’s Director of Technology, presented an annual technology plan to board members. Dr. Lucas Shivers, Director of Elementary Education, also brought elementary-level educators into the meeting to relay results of work by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Waiting throughout this meeting were over a dozen parents and student athletes from Manhattan High School. Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Brian Havens, 36, of Wamego, Kansas on two warrants with the offense of probation violation (original offenses included forgery and aggravated endangering of a child as well as violation of a protective order). Havens was arrested in the 100 block of S. 4th Street in Manhattan at approximately 8:15 AM on February 16, 2016. He was given a bond of $7,000.00 and at the time of this report was no longer confined at the Riley County Jail. The Wamego City Commission was introduced to the new Library Director. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page introduced Bryan McBride, the new Wamego Public Library Director, who took over on January 19th, replacing former director Peter Vopata. In other business: The Commission approved the logistics of this year’s Tulip Festival, which Page said is identical to last year’s plan. The plan includes street blocking around the City Park which requires approval from the City. The Wamego City Commission reviewed the tax abatements on two businesses. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page reviewed the annual tax abatement renewals for Homestead Housing and Caterpillar Work Tools. According to Page, both entities are sent a renewal application from the County, that’s completed and sent back to the City, who must verify the facilities are being used for the intended purpose of the original abatement.
