Graduate students and their families gathered in Bramlage Coliseum Friday afternoon for their commencement ceremony. This commencement was one of several ceremonies at K-State Manhattan and K-State Salina campuses. During this Graduate School Commencement, former U.S. Senator and Kansas native Nancy Kassebaum Baker received an honorary doctorate degree before her commencement address to the graduating class of 2015. Kassebaum received her education at Topeka High School, graduated from the University of Kansas in 1954 and received her Master of Arts in diplomatic history from the University of Michigan. In an interview given on Friday state representative Sydney Carlin told KMAN that the legislature was unable to come up with a tax solution to fund shortfalls, and now has only one day left in the regular session.  Representative Carlin believes the house will go into “overtime” to correct the issue, but warns her constituents that the funds won’t be available to pay the members of the house for the extra sessions. Today, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey met with ROTC candidates at Kansas State University to discuss the future of the military. He also served as the featured speaker at their graduation/commissioning ceremony today and is slated to make a presentation later this evening. General Dempsey has vast experience in training and warfighting on the modern battlefield as former commander of TRADOC and U.S. Central Command. General Dempsey received his commission in 1974.

A brutal double murder led to a trial which convicted Luis Aguirre of murdering his ex-girlfriend Tonya Maldonado and their 13-month-old son Juan in August of 2012.  Now the Kansas Supreme Court may be ordering a retrial in the case.  In 2012 Riley County district attorney Barry Wilkerson expressed his belief that justice had been served over the conviction, and life sentence without parole received by Aguirre at the conclusion of the trial. When a Manhattan man saw an area near his neighborhood overrun by weeds and trash, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Andy Deckert has planted around three thousand irises in the area between Miller Parkway Circle and the water tower. In the two years since the project began, Deckert has invested thousands of hours in the iris planting. The project started after Deckert received a bulb from his daughter. On Thursday at approximately 10:15 a.m. officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Darius Williams, 21, of Manhattan on a warrant for motion to revoke probation violations. The warrant originated out of Geary County. Williams was arrested in the 100 block of Court House Plaza. His bond was set at $5,000.
