University of Colorado Colorado Springs Police Officer Garrett Swasey is being hailed as a hero. Swasey was one of three people killed during a shooting and police shootout at a Planned Parenthood building in Colorado Springs.
Updated 5:30 a.m. Monday: An update regarding an explosion in northern Riley County KMAN first reported Saturday evening. Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins reported the call came in about 3:41 Saturday afternoon, with an explosion and structure fire at 20621 Ober Rd. in Northern Riley County. Persistent freezing rain and sleet is causing safety issues on roads in the area. The NE Kansas Regional Notification System has released the following notice for roads in Pottawatomie County: Inclement weather is expected into Monday. Personnel are actively treating high & low volume roads with sand and salt. High volume gravel roads will be addressed with motor graders spreading existing gravel. Gravel roads are extremely hazardous due to ice & travel on these roads is not recommended.
The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to two vehicle accident Saturday morning seven miles west of Manhattan on K-18 milepost 180 EB. A 2007 Honda Civic driven by Salvador Munoz-Solis (48) of Topeka was travelling eastbound on K-18 when it hit an unoccupied 2014 Ford Explorer, which was legally parked on the shoulder of the roadway. The Civic skidded on the icy roadway, lost control, hit the Explorer, then came to rest in the ditch. Both Munoz-Solis and his passenger, Abigail Billings (21) of Junction City were transported to Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan for possible injuries.

Two men from Los Angeles, Calif., were arrested for drug charges Friday morning. Hector Jugo Lima, Jr., 20, and Frederick John Carl Lima, 23, were arrested on I-70 near mile marker 316 east-bound for Manhattan for the sale and distribution of stimulants and marijuana. Both men were put on bond for $10,000 each and as of this report were confined in the Riley County Jail.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A Kansas City, Kansas, man has been charged with child abuse after police responded to an armed disturbance that led them to discover human remains at a barn on his property. Forty-four-year-old Michael A. Jones also was charged Friday with aggravated battery and aggravated assault with a firearm. He is being held on $10 million bond. The Wyandotte County prosecutor’s office didn’t immediately respond to an email asking whether he had an attorney who could comment.
