The Manhattan City commission adopted the Manhattan Urban Area Comprehensive Plan (MUACP) with a unanimous vote on Tuesday night in city hall. The MUACP lays out several areas for development of future housing, and other infrastructure strategies, to handle the projected growth of the city.  One of the areas which is deemed as a “green zone” for development is the nearby Blue Township development.  Other topics covered by the MUACP included a need for more affordable housing for the workforce, more downtown revitalization, and redevelopment of the central core district.  The plan calls for housing near campus to be raised…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A proposal has been introduced in the Kansas Senate to spell out grounds for impeaching state Supreme Court justices, and the list includes attempting to usurp the Legislature’s authority. The bill was introduced Tuesday by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Republican Sen. Mitch Holmes of St. John said he sought the measure. The state constitution says justices can be impeached by the House, tried by the Senate and removed if convicted of treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors. Large community parks are the most used in the Manhattan and Riley County area according to consultants giving the briefing on a recent “statistically valid” survey. Consultants are currently giving numbers from the survey at the joint Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Manhattan city commission work session in city hall.  Indoor training facilities top the list for needed programs, and a combination of sales and property taxes is the number one option for funding parks and recreations projects according to the consultants.  Consultants say more community input will be taking place, and full analysis continues on the data.  This…

After an alleged attempted robbery back in November, a Manhattan man is facing three felony level charges. Christopher Hudgins appeared in Riley County District Court on Tuesday afternoon for his preliminary hearing. Hudgins is charged with attempted aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, and contributing to a child’s misconduct. These charges stem from a home invasion case that took place in the 2300 block of Cheryl Terrace.  When originally reported, it was believed Hudgins was just a victim-as he suffered a gunshot wound to the face.  It was later discovered he was a suspect instead. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release Tuesday afternoon regarding a theft that was reported on Monday. Law enforcement responded to the area of Roepke Road and Excel Road, in rural Manhattan, for a reported theft of an enclosed trailer from a job site.  Construction crews discovered that sometime between Friday, March 20th to Monday, unknown individuals had taken a white 12 foot single axle enclosed trailer with rear and side doors. At the time of the theft, the trailer had black lettering of VPS on the sides.  It displayed a blue Kansas exempt trailer plate and contained concrete…

Breaking News: Germanwings Airbus A320 airliner has crashed in the French Alps between Barcelonnette and Digne, French aviation officials and police have said. The jet belongs to the German low-cost airline Germanwings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa. The plane had reportedly been en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf and was carrying 142 passengers and six crew. Both Airbus and Germanwings have said they aware of the reports but cannot yet confirm them.
