The City of Manhattan is preparing to fully reopen the intersection of Denison and Kimball Avenues. The new signals were activated Monday and put into flash mode. Motorists are advised to proceed through the intersection with caution. City officials say starting with flashing lights at a newly signalized intersection is a federal requirement. It plans to go live with normal traffic operation at the intersection on Friday. Earlier this spring, the city installed a new 287 foot truss at the seven lane intersection, the city’s largest. Anthony Toliver, 35, of Manhattan was arrested on May 12, 2025, at approximately 9:03 a.m. on a probable cause warrant for criminal deprivation of property, two counts of criminal damage to property, robbery, theft of property or services, domestic battery, and intimidation of a witness or victim. Toliver was issued a total bond of $20,000 and remains confined at the time of this report. This warrant was in connection to four separate incidents which occurred on May 14, 2024, August 8, 2024, November 29, 2024, and January 6, 2025. The City of Manhattan on Monday announced the promotion of Brian Johnson to the position of public works director. Johnson had previously been assistant director of public works for 11 years and has held the title of city engineer since 2014. He was hired by the City of Manhattan in October 2008 as a principal civil engineer. City Manager Danielle Dulin said Johnson’s experience with the department made him a natural fit for the position. By Emma Loura Riley County officials are working to prepare a new fireworks resolution to replace the county’s existing regulations following a change in state law. At Monday’s meeting, the county counselor and emergency management director proposed an updated resolution that would extend the sale of fireworks by a couple of days and increase the fee for a fireworks’ sales permit. The regulations the county currently has in place are from 1978. Senate Bill 199 allows for the year-round sale of fireworks for permanent retailers and extends the sale of fireworks for seasonal retailers from June 20 to July 7…

The entire Manhattan High tennis team is headed to state after a strong performance in Saturday’s regional tournament held at Riverside Tennis Complex in Wichita. Manhattan High baseball took care of business and more over the weekend, dominating all-around en route to becoming the 2025 Hays High Western Plains Diamond Classic Champions. The Indians went 4-0 across games on Friday and Saturday, catapulting themselves into second place in 6A West’s regional standings with a 16-4 overall record. Manhattan only trails 21-2 Lawrence Free State. Manhattan jumped-started the weekend with a 12-5 win over Hays during Friday’s opener, led by Asher Newton’s five RBI and two runs scored. Riley County Police arrested two individuals Friday at a Manhattan motel in connection to alleged drug possession and distribution charges. According to Monday’s activity report, 42-year-old Donte Roberts, of Junction City, and 34-year-old Decemantrea Richardson, of Wichita, were arrested Friday at the Westwood Motel. Both are facing felony weapons charges, possession of marijuana and methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia with intent to distribute. Richardson is additionally charged with cocaine possession. Roberts was issued a total bond of $12,000 and is no longer confined. Richardson remains jailed on a $15,000 bond. Timothy Lavender, 37, of Manhattan, was arrested on May 9, 2025, at approximately 8:21 p.m. in the 2400 block of Himes Road, on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation.
