William Benner, 23, of Manhattan, was arrested on March 4, 2025, at approximately 7:55 PM in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road. Benner was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. The original charges in this matter were possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while suspended. Total bond was set at $5,000. Kansas State baseball’s Maximus Martin was voted the Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. The transfer from Georgia State is the second Wildcat to garner a weekly award, joining left-hander Lincoln Sheffield, who picked up Co-Newcomer of the Week honors last week. A native of Edgewater Park, N.J., Martin led the way for a Wildcat offense that outscored opponents 28-17 and out-hit opponents 33-25. She is being tried for the double-homicide of her ex-husband Michael Sisco and his fiancée, Karen Harkness. The trial for the July 6, 2002, murders is taking place in Pottawatomie County, after concerns about influence from media coverage in Shawnee County. Courtney Jane Hochman filed as candidate in the race for a spot on the USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden board of education Tuesday morning after running in 2023. Hochman is a 25-year Manhattan resident with both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education from K-State. She’s currently working on a PhD in student affairs in higher education. Crews began demolishing the downtown Commerce Bank building Monday as part of plans to construct a new retail and residential space in its place. Manhattan city commissioners in December approved more than $2 million in tax breaks to raze the building at 727 Poyntz Ave., including a 10-year property tax abatement and a sales tax exemption on construction materials. The request, which came from Hutton Development, also included an appeal to the city government to pay for half the cost of improvements to Poyntz Avenue. Joseph Marlow, 25, of Manhattan, was arrested on March 3, 2025, at approximately 7:20 PM in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road. Marlow was taken into custody on a probable cause offense of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. His total bond was set at $125,000, and he is currently confined at the time of the report. According to reporting from The Topeka Capital-Journal, the contract between the consulting firm and Manhattan’s National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility worth $355,236 was among the contracts on the chopping block for the Trump administration’s efficiency initiative. The contract, with Berney Associates out of Maryland, is for “NBAF leadership development, coaching, team-building and strategy services,” according to government records. Manhattan city commissioners on Tuesday will consider a request to issue $52 million in industrial revenue bonds to Meadowlark Hills to build 43 new independent living units, an underground parking deck and a fitness and classroom space. Industrial revenue bonds are a tax-exempt financing mechanism local government entities issue with no fiscal impact to themselves because companies repay them. The bonds allow companies to benefit from property tax exemptions and sales tax breaks while funding a project. The Times of Pott County late last week reported that Rachel Hockenbarger, daughter of Westboro Baptist Church’s late founder Fred Phelps, is still a member of the crusading anti-LGBTQ congregation and now an assistant Pottawatomie County attorney. Newly elected county attorney John Paul Washburn hired Hockenbarger — who will make $86,054 per year in the position, according to county records — in January to replace Brian Yearout, who resigned to take a judgeship.
