MINNEAPOLIS (AP)– Last year, the Kansas City Royals were the October darlings, winning their first eight postseason games to reach the World Series for the first time since before many of their players were born. They won’t be able to surprise anybody this year. They’ll be the favorites to repeat as American League champions. Salvador Perez added to his career-high home run total, Johnny Cueto pitched five solid innings and the Royals secured home-field advantage throughout the postseason by beating the Minnesota Twins 6-1 on Sunday. The Royals (95-67) posted their best record since the 1980 team went 97-65, besting…
CINCINNATI (AP)– Andy Dalton completes his first 10 passes and makes another big play. The defense allows nothing other than field goals. Through four games, the Bengals are still perfect. And awfully impressive, too. Dalton threw a 55-yard touchdown pass on the run — the type of throw he’s rarely made in the past — and Cincinnati remained unbeaten with a 36-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The Bengals (4-0) matched the third-best start in franchise history, two wins shy of the club record. They’ve got the look of a team finally capable of not only reaching…

A 94-page petition has been filed by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s office with the U-S Supreme Court in the Luis Aguirre murder case, involving the 2009 murders of Tanya and Juan Maldonado. The Petition for Writ of Certiorari asks two main questions–Whether a request to temporarily cease questioning is a clear and unequivocal assertion of the right to remain silent under the Fifth Amendment? And whether the use of the equivocal phrase “I guess” along with an explicitly expressed desire to continue talking to police is a clear and unequivocal assertion of the right to remain silent under the Fifth Amendment? The petition goes on to…
TOPEKA — A major financial rating agency describes Kansas’ new school funding law as “negative” for local districts’ credit and creating financial stress for some of them. Moody’s Investors Service issued a report Friday citing a new annual budget for the state’s largest school district in Wichita that calls for higher local taxes and spending cuts. The new law enacted in April replaced the state’s former per-student aid formula with grants based on districts’ previous funding. It was designed to provide stable funding. But Moody’s said the new law “disadvantages” growing districts by not automatically increasing their aid. Gov. Sam…
By Chris Kutz, K-State Athletics Communications FORT WORTH, Texas – K-State erased a two-set deficit on Saturday at TCU, but the Horned Frogs hit .368 in the fifth to stave off the comeback attempt as the Wildcats fell, 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 17-25, 15-9), at the University Recreational Center. It was the fifth time the Wildcats (9-6, 1-2 Big 12) played a five-set match this year and first time since November 2014 that they forced a fifth set after dropping the first two. However, starting with last year’s November match against West Virginia, K-State has lost five of its last…
MINNEAPOLIS (AP)– The Minnesota Twins’ surprising run for a playoff spot came down to the final innings on the next to last day of season. Minnesota was eliminated from the AL wild-card race Saturday, getting stifled by Yordano Ventura for seven innings in a 5-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Blaine Boyer (3-6) allowed two runs, one earned, while getting two outs for the Twins (83-78), who weren’t expected to contend this season with a young squad led by rookie manager Paul Molitor. But Minnesota began play Saturday two games back of Houston for the second wild-card spot. “I…
STILLWATER, Okla-The schedule will show Kansas State lost to Oklahoma State, 36-34, Saturday afternoon. In reality, the Wildcats’ true opponent may have been their own bodies. Plagued by injuries coming into the game and challenged by more of them during it, K-State (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) led most of the way before falling just short of ending a 16-year drought at Boone Pickens Stadium. OSU’s Ben Grogan nailed a 37-yard field goal with 32 seconds left to hand the Wildcats their first loss of the season. Starting quarterback Joe Hubener exited on K-State’s first drive after a nasty collision that buried…
