TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas collected $22 million more in taxes than expected this month. The Department of Revenue reported yesterday that the state collected almost $310 million in taxes in February, when it anticipated taking in $287 million. The numbers are good news for Republican Governor Sam Brownback and legislators, but they don’t solve the state’s budget problems.

Manhattan High basketball closed out the regular season in grand fashion on Friday night at the MHS gym with a sweep over the Seaman Vikings. The MHS girls closed out the regular season with a 49-39 win over the Lady Vikes that gave the Lady Indians a share of the Centennial League title with Washburn Rural. Police tape surrounds one of five crime scenes near Tyrone, Mo., on Friday morning, Feb. 27, 2015. A gunman killed seven people and wounded an eighth person in an overnight house-to-house rampage in the small town in the Missouri Ozarks before apparently committing suicide in a vehicle, authorities said Friday. The victims were found in four homes in Tyrone, about 40 miles north of the Arkansas line. The 36-year-old gunman was discovered in a neighboring county, dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Kinder said.

The Kansas Court of Appeals Friday had a mixed bag of opinions in a Riley County case involving aggravated criminal sodomy and indecent liberties with a child. The opinion regarding Fort Riley soldier George Ferenz, 32, relates to a September 2013 conviction. The Court of Appeals affirmed in part, reversed in part, but also vacated in part the Riley County District court’s rulings in the case. The court reversed two of the counts against Ferenz, indicating they shouldn’t have been split according to who touched who–but lumped together into one count–which applies to incidents reported in a bed and shower…

A 20-year-old Manhattan man was taken into custody by Riley County Police on a failure to apparent originating in Wabaunsee County.  Aaron Lewis was arrested at the Riley County Police Department Thursday at approximately 5:15 PM. Lewis was given no bond. ### Riley County Police arrested  Lucas Fenwick, 25, of Norton while he was at the Riley County Police Department just before 4:30 Thursday afternoon. Fenwick’s warrant lists the offenses of burglary and theft.
