Inmates convicted in connection with three Geary county cases are up for public comment sessions and possible parole. Tabor Adkins, 67, was convicted for cases in 1983 of attempted murder in the first degree, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated sodomy. Terry Kirchoff, 49, was convicted for involuntary manslaughter in 1987, as well as criminal damage to property in Geary County in 1985, and aggravated burglary and rape cases in the early 1990s in Lyons County. Riley County Police have released details regarding an accidental death involving a firearm. Around 1:20 a.m. on Monday, officers responded to a report of an accidental shooting in the 14000 block of Gardiner Road in Randolph. Once on scene, officers found that Steven Hoard (46) of Randolph sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was deceased. This accident was the result of Hoard tripping while holding the firearm near a wooded area on his property. The Riley County Police Department ruled this death as an accident and do not suspect foul play.
The Pottawatomie County Commissioners met for their weekly meeting Monday, Feb. 9, which began with a discussion of an issue tabled from the week prior concerning the collection of delinquent sewer payments in the Green Valley District. County Attorney John Watt is continuing investigate possible recourse for collecting these unpaid bills, but it seems the commissioners are in a tight place. “We really have no control over the water issue there so it makes it kind of a tough situation,” said Commission Chairman Pat Weixelman. Update at 1:45 p.m.: Officers responded to the median of Seth Child Road above Kimball Avenue when the call came in, along with members of the Manhattan Fire Department. Bomb technicians were called to the scene as a precaution after the item was confirmed to be potentially explosive in nature. They collected the black tube, which was several inches in length, and rendered it safe. After further investigation, officers found that the item was improvised and explosive.
