A preliminary hearing was held on Friday, Jan. 30 in Riley County District Court for a first-degree attempted murder case. Samuel Dartez, 30, of Manhattan appeared in front of Judge William Malcolm in connection with a November incident in which he allegedly stabbed a woman about the face and neck. Several witnesses took the stand during the hearing, including the woman who contacted emergency personnel and the RCPD dispatcher who took the call. Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson and Assistant County Attorney Jeremy Crist presented several pieces of evidence to the court, including photos of the crime scene and the victim’s wounds. U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) gained a seat as a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Defense (SACD) for 114th Congress on Thursday, Jan. 29. The Manhattan High girls basketball team took care of business on Thursday night in the first round of the Mid America Classic against Valley Center, beating the Hornets 57-37. Manhattan had 11 players score in the ball game with no Indian scoring in double figures. Amara Ehie led the way for MHS with nine points. Gigi McAtee and Madison Mittie each pitched in with eight apiece. Manhattan shot 46% from the field and hit 12 of 18 from the free throw line.
