A mere two weeks after the Riley County USD 378 School Board narrowly approved his resignation, embattled Superintendent Brad Starnes has a new job lined up. Starnes confirmed to KMAN Tuesday afternoon published reports that he will be the new Superintendent at USD 329 in Wabunsee County, a district that includes schools in towns like Alma and Paxico. Starnes submitted his resignation earlier this month to the USD 378 Board amid some friction between his office, some board members and some members of the community. Onaga police are currently investigating a bomb threat that took place late this morning at Onaga High School. According to Onaga Police Chief Daniel Costlow, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department received word of the threat at 10:42 a.m. Tuesday morning. The city chose to evacuate both the school and hospital as a precaution. Costlow said police have no reason to believe there is any validity to the threat at this time and that they’re currently questioning a person of interest in the incident. Sheriff Greg Riat says a boy under the age of 14 was arrested then released to his parents after being booked.

A few more filings for school board and city commission elections were submitted prior to the noon deadline on Tuesday. Jay Caley submitted his name for the Riley County Schools USD 378 position 1 seat.  For the position two seat, Donna Bulk put her name into the race, as well as Michael Lindell. Vinton Visser and Michael McCoy both filed for school board at large positions. On Friday, January 23, Jerome Glaspie pled guilty to attempted robbery, aggravated battery and criminal possession of a firearm. The charges stem from an incident in September. The victim, Angel Gonzales-Cintron, said Glaspie shot him during a disturbance in the parking lot of the Budget Host Motel in Junction City. Gonzales-Cinton suffered a superficial would to his neck area, but declined medical treatment. Glaspie fled the scene, but was later found and arrested by the Junction City police on charges of attempted murder and attempted robbery. Glaspie will be sentenced March 27.

Update at 9 a.m. on Tuesday: Officers responded to Windwood Drive in Junction City. Upon arrival, it was decided to contact the Kansas State Fire Marshall to assist in the investigation.  The Riley County Police Department Bomb Squad was then contacted as well. Several items suspected for the use of making explosives were located and collected by the bomb squad.  They were able to dispose of the suspicious items.  The incident wrapped up around 11:30 that evening.
