Hundreds of young farmers and ranchers traveled to Manhattan for the three day 2015 Kansas Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Leaders Conference.  The event was held at the Hilton Garden Inn. Friday’s presentations were geared towards college students, as a collegiate luncheon and agriculture quiz bowl highlighted the day.  The majority of the conference took place on Saturday with several different workshops and networking opportunities. The event is set to wrap up on Sunday with a brief introduction of the new Kansas Farm Bureau President, Rich Felts and a closing keynote discussion. One of the greatest Kansas State Basketball legends and well known figures in Wildcat sports history received a special honor Saturday morning with the unveiling of Tex Winter Drive. The 92-year old Winter was part of all four of K-State’s Final Four appearances, two as an assistant coach and two as head coach while winning an all-time best 261 games and eight conference championships between 1953 and 1968. Speakers included Athletics Director John Currie, play-by-play voice Wyatt Thompson and Mr. K-State himself Ernie Barrett who was Winter’s first recruit in 1947. MHS rallied from a 14-point third quarter to defeat Shawnee Mission East 52-50 in the McPherson Invitational semifinals Friday night. MHS went on a 15-0 run to take the lead and held on in the final seconds as the Lancers’ potential game-winner rimmed out. Pierson McAtee scored 14 points for the Indians, who moved to 9-1 on the season. MHS will face tournament host McPherson in tonight’s title game. The BullPups 11-0 and ranked No. 2 in Class 4A D1. Another candidate has declared intent to run for a school board position. After filing his paperwork on the afternoon of Thursday, Jan. 22, Jared Larson of Leonardville officially announced his decision to compete for a spot on the Riley County USD 378 School Board. A Fort Riley soldier was bound over following his preliminary hearing in Riley County District Court Friday, Jan. 23. Spc. Sean Wedgwood, 22, appeared with his attorney, Larry McRell, in front of Judge Sheila Hochhauser at 10:00 a.m. Wedgwood was brought before the court for rape charges in connection with an August 30th incident in which he is accused of assaulting a woman he knew, according to police records.
