Children of all ages, along with parents and grandparents, showed up for the Manhattan Public Library’s summer reading kick-off Saturday. Public Relations Coordinator Danielle Schapaugh tells KMAN it’s a fun time of year for readers when they can read whatever they want. For every 10 minutes a child spends reading they get a sticker on their reading log–and once they’ve logged a certain number they get a prize. Last year more than 22-hundred children, 370 teens, and 460 adults participated in the summer reading program and together logged more than one million minutes of reading time.Hopes are for 3,000 children…

A Fort Riley soldier taken into custody in Kansas City, Missouri Wednesday in a child abuse case has been transported back to Junction City. Cyjay Echon, 22, was booked into the Geary County Detention Center in Junction City Friday afternoon. According to the JCPD arrest report, released Saturday morning, Echon’s charges include aggravated battery, intentional great bodily harm or abuse of a child under 18 years of age, and intentional torture/cruel beating/and inhumane punishment. Several area FFA members participated in last week’s 87th Kansas FFA State Convention, held at the Kansas State University Campus. Blue Valley/Randolph’s Kyle Apley completed his term as State FFA reporter, after helping lead the convention. Other local FFA members receiving recognition were Rock Creek’s Cassandra Ebert, who received a State FFA Degree. Ebert also was granted a National FFA foundation scholarship.
