As a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) has announced that the Fiscal Year 2015 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill released by the House Appropriations Committee on Jan. 9, 2015 includes $300 million for construction of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, Kan. The U.S. News & World Report’s latest rankings of the best online degree programs rate two of Kansas State University’s courses in the top-tier. According to the report, K-State ranks No. 20 and No. 86  for the best online graduate engineering and online graduate education programs, respectively. A police official on the scene of the standoff between two armed brothers suspected in the massacre at the Charlie Hebdo newsroom says the suspects are dead, and their hostage has been freed. Reports also say the man who took hostages at a Kosher Grocery store on the outskirts of Paris is also dead but there are reports that before he was killed he may have killed up to four of his hostages.

Morning hearings were held on Friday in Geary County court for three defendants in a case involving the death of a Junction City woman. Maryssa Middleton, Drexel Woody, and Larry Anderson are facing multiple charges related to what authorities are calling the first degree murder of 24-year-old Amanda Clemons of Junction City. According to Junction City Police reports Clemens was last seen being placed into a silver vehicle with four other occupants in February of 2014. A 36-year-old Marysville man waived his preliminary hearing in a Pottawatomie County case Friday that relates to running a vehicle into two Manhattan businesses the day after Christmas. Jason Butler’s arraignment is set for February 19th. Butler’s charges include felony DUI, leaving the scene of an injury accident, abuse of toxic vapors, and driving while suspended. He was arrested later the same Friday morning he allegedly drove into the building housing Short Go and Staples just off Tuttle Creek Boulevard. Riley County Police initiating a traffic stop began investigating illegal drugs Thursday night at approximately 8:00 PM.  Jeremy Spaur, 30, of Manhattan was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and violation of ignition interlock device. Spaur’s bond was set at  $7,500. He was arrested in the 600 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. ### Officers with the Riley County Police Department filed a report investigating a rape that reportedly occurred in the city limits of Manhattan.
