Congressman Tim Huelskamp conducted a Town Hall meeting Tuesday in Pottawatomie County. Huelskamp discussed a wide variety of topics ranging from marriage, pro-life topics and Food Stamp reform. Pottawatomie County residents also discussed immigration and amnesty. A first degree murder/child abuse case involving a Junction City man will be entering its fourth day Thursday. The state has been calling witnesses in the Christopher Lyman trial all this week, with more state witnesses expected to last though out the week. Lyman was arrested in September of 2013 after an eight-month-old child was brought into the emergency room at Geary Communitiy Hospital, then transported by helicopter to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. The child later died. The trial, which began with jury selection Monday, is expected to last two weeks.
Indicating he’d “never hurt a woman like that,” the defendant in a Riley County rape case gave his version of events that occurred in August of last year just outside a local movie theatre. Fort Riley soldier Sean Wedgwood recounted three trips to the alleged victim’s car and two trips to his vehicle parked a few rows away in the theatre’s parking lot, following the movie the two had gone to see. A federal grand jury returned indictments against the Topeka couple accused of forcing a teenager into prostitution. Reginald Newman (29) and Tiara Newman (21) have been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor and one count of sex trafficking of a minor. According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom, the Topeka couple met the victim in March of this year and since then had conspired to engage her in prosititution. “It was like a switch”. That’s the quote given by the victim who allegedly was sexually assaulted by Sean Wedgwood back in August of last year in the Carmike Seth Child Cinema parking lot. Wedgwood, who is a Fort Riley soldier, was charged with felony level rape after a reported incident from August of last year. He appeared in Riley County District Court on Wednesday for his jury trial. The trial began late Tuesday afternoon with opening statements, but the actual victim in the case was questioned on Wednesday. An injury accident worked by Riley County Police is listed in a separate report. #### Riley County Police arrested a Manhattan woman Tuesday on warrants for failure to appear and motion to revoke probation. Jacquelyn Casteel, 38, was taken into custody while in the 600 block of Colorado Street at approximately 9:50 AM Tuesday. Original offenses associated with Casteel’s warrants were listed as theft by deception, driving while suspended/revoked, and other traffic related offenses. Bond was set at $7,000.
Emergency crews responded to an injury collision near the intersection of the 100 block of Bluemont Avenue and Frontage Road in Manhattan Tuesday afternoon at about 2:45 PM. Riley County Police found that a 1997 Ford CNT 4-door driven by Nitasha Ruff, 37, of Kansas City, Kansas was traveling east on Bluemont Avenue and preparing to turn north onto Frontage Road.
