The fourth case involving the aggravated robbery and kidnapping incident in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Place last month, was addressed in Riley County Court Tuesday afternoon. Kenneth Mallet (22) was arrested earlier this month in Illinois for aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping charges stemming from two separate cases. Mallet appeared for his status hearing Tuesday via web cam. His case was set for a preliminary hearing on January 9th at 2 p.m. The three other men charged in this incident will have preliminary hearings on December 19th. The Manhattan man charged in connection with the attempted murder case earlier this month, where a woman was reportedly stabbed, appeared in Riley County Court via web cam Tuesday afternoon. Samuel Dartez (30) was stopped by authorities in Morris County a couple weeks ago, and a standoff ensued. Dartez was eventually arrested on 1st degree attempted murder, and his bond was set at $500,000. Dartez was deemed eligible for a court appointed attorney. A long customer line greeted the new PepperJax Grill in Manhattan Tuesday, with the restaurant in Aggieville opening its doors at 11 a.m. Director of Operations Trent Smith tells KMAN they’re excited about being in Manhattan. He says the pictures on the wall have a local touch. Restaurant Spokesman Mike Jungers says there’s some research when it comes to the decor, with background on pictures provided by local historical societies and libraries. The restaurant specializes in “America’s Best Philly” sandwiches–with the traditional steak, but also chicken, shrimp, and veggie varieties. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A group of Kansas investors has proposed a $130 million casino in southeast Kansas, the third project to vie for the license. The Cherokee County Commission on Monday endorsed the project from Castle Rock Casino Resort. The company wants to build a casino with 1,400 slot machines, 35 table games and a poker room with 16 tables. Also planned are a 200-room hotel, three restaurants and a health club and spa. (AP) A grand jury has decided not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown, the unarmed, black 18-year-old whose fatal shooting sparked weeks of sometimes-violent protests. St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch announced the decision Monday evening. A grand jury of nine whites and three blacks had been meeting weekly since Aug. 20 to consider evidence. At least nine votes would have been required to indict Wilson. The Justice Department is conducting an investigation into possible civil rights violations that could result in federal charges. He shot the Wildcats into the second round of the Maui Invitational against Purdue.
