The City of Manhattan Fire Department would like to remind citizens to use fireworks responsibly and enjoy a safe Fourth of July holiday. The Manhattan Fire Department responded to fewer fireworks related calls during the legal discharge dates in 2014 than in 2013. There were five fireworks related calls in 2014, all occurring on July 3rd or 4th, with no fire loss being reported. To keep safe, it is important to follow the City of Manhattan’s basic firework regulations:  Discharge is allowed from 8 a.m. to midnight July 1 through July 4 Sales are allowed from noon July 1 through midnight July 4…

Sales tax numbers for Manhattan in June were down, according to figures just released by the State Treasurer’s Office and Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen. The $870,536 collected is about $18,000 less than June of last year, when the numbers were $888,675. the net budget impact is a negative $4,515–previous to this a large surplus was shown in the budget impact numbers. Hayen notes this is the first month in 2015 that was not higher than the preceding year. And with those words, Riley County EMS Director Larry Couchman reported that he and his staff experienced a relatively smooth Stampede weekend. Shortly after Sunday headliner Travis Tritt took the stage, Country Stampede President Wayne Rouse was finally able to sit down and relax…for just a few moments. Travis Tritt, the final act of the weekend event, was ready to play.  “We are gonna have a blast tonight”, he said, before tearing through a high-energy set featuring most of his hits. And then it was done.  The curtain closed on this 20th anniversary edition of the Country Stampede.
