Two project bid openings, and one equipment purchase bid opening, were held during Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting. The first was for the University Park/Lakeside Heights utilities extension project.  Two bids were submitted for this project: Josh Connett Excavation LLC of Manhattan-$53,465 Larson Construction, Inc. of Manhattan-$53,465 Commissioners and public works officials both stated this was the first time they have received identical bids. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A small plane has crashed at Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport, sending up huge plumes of black smoke that can be seen for miles around the city.  According to the Associated Press a fire chief is indicating at least two people are dead inside the Kansas airport building where the small plane crashed. Authorities say the total death toll is now four. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory says a small Beechcraft model plane crashed just before 10 a.m. Thursday. Justin Hunt, 24, of Manhattan was arrested Wednesday at approximately 1:45 PM while in the 100 block of Manhattan Town Center in Manhattan. Police made this arrest as part of ongoing investigations into the illegal sale and distribution of drugs in the Manhattan and Riley County area. Hunt was arrested for sale or distribution of opiates, opium, or narcotic drugs, sale or distribution of hallucinogenic drugs (marijuana) (X2), using a telecommunication device to facilitate a drug transaction (X2), criminal use of a weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia to grow or distribute marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Property owners came out in force at the Wamego City Commission Public Forum Tuesday. The meeting was scheduled to further discuss the Contractor Licensing Code Ordinance passed earlier this year requiring licensed contractors to do any work on property that requires a permit and that is not the owner’s primary residence, such as a property purchased for resale or a rental. The audience consisted of owners of rental properties and building contractors.
