Jesse Brewer, 31, of Manhattan was arrested on July 14, 2025, at approximately 4:55 p.m. on a Riley County District Court warrant for theft. Brewer was issued a total bond of $5,000 and is no longer confined at the time of this report. A Manhattan man was killed Monday when his semi truck veered off the road and crashed into a cornfield. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 54-year-old Donnell Martin was westbound on US Highway 36 in rural Doniphan County just before 6:30 p.m. when the truck exited the roadway to the north, struck a culvert and fence and continued into a cornfield. By Rose Gruenbacher Riley County commissioners on Monday considered a 2026 budget which would create a 10% increase in property taxes for the average homeowner. The proposed county mill rate is 39.981, an increase of almost 2 mills from 2025. A mill is $1 in taxes for every $1,000 in assessed, taxable property value. A homeowner who paid $436.34 in property tax on a $100,000 home in 2025 would pay $481.68 on a home now worth $105,000 in 2026, using the county’s 5% average property tax increase for existing single-family homes. Authorities have arrested a Junction City man after he apparently brandished a firearm during an argument. According to the Riley County Police Department, 27-year-old Brian McCallum was charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct after an incident Sunday afternoon near the intersection of Fort Riley Blvd. and Poyntz Ave. A 39-year-old man was listed as the victim in the case. A Manhattan man was cited over the weekend after striking a pedestrian with her truck Friday afternoon. The Riley County Police Department says 26-year-old Jason Bryant was driving in the 800 block of North 3rd Place when the incident occurred. The pedestrian, 24-year-old Samantha Taylor, also of Manhattan, was transported to Via Christ for treatment of her injuries. Bryant was cited for failing to yield to pedestrian in a crosswalk. Officers responded to a report of an injury crash in the 800 block of N 3rd Pl. in Manhattan on July 11, 2025, at approximately 12:13 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by, Jason Bryant, 26, of Manhattan had struck a pedestrian, Samantha Taylor, 24, of Manhattan. The RCPD released its latest reports, detailing a range of criminal activity in Manhattan over the weekend of July 12–13. Among the most serious incidents were multiple arrests related to domestic violence. On July 12, officers responded to a domestic battery and aggravated domestic battery case at The Links Apartments on Augusta Way. Eighteen-year-old Malachi Kahssay was arrested for allegedly choking a family member, while 19-year-old Alexander Anderson was also arrested in connection to the same case.
