TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas officials say about 20 percent of the state’s 1.74 million registered voters took part in this month’s primary elections. Secretary of State Kris Kobach chairs the three-member State Board of Canvassers, which certified the results of the Aug. 5 primaries on Wednesday. Nearly 351,000 ballots were cast. Kobach had predicted 22 percent turnout. The 20 percent participation was the lowest for a Kansas primary election since 2006, when it was 18 percent. After several court appearances and a change in defense attorney, a Manhattan man has entered a plea of no contest to a variety of charges, including kidnapping and aggravated robbery. Jerred Snyder, 30, withdrew all previously filed motions and entered the plea Wednesday morning in Riley County District Court. Snyder’s sentencing is set for September 29th. His no contest plea also applied to a separate case of making a false writing. Update at 3:00 p.m.: The defense called it’s first witness to the stand-Criminalist out of Cameron, Missouri, John Cayton. Defense Attorney, Ron Evans asked Cayton several questions about the gun that was allegedly used in this incident. Cayton shared a few instances where similar guns have accidentally fired without people meaning to shoot them. Prosecuting State Attorney, Sherri Schuck cross-examined Cayton, and first began by asking if it was true that he was discharged from the Kansas Bureau of Investigations and the Johnson County Crime Lab. The Geary County Sheriff’s department responded to a two vehicle injury accident on U.S. 77 Highway and mile marker 153 a little before six Tuesday evening. Mellissa Rundus of Manhattan was driving a 2013 Nissan Maxima and Robert Pigg of Junction City was driving a 2007 Hyundai Elantra when the collision occurred. Rundus and two passengers were sent to Geary Community Hospital for treatment.
A Kansas City man faces a large bond after his arrest by Riley County Police Tuesday afternoon. Cortez Beal, 27, was taken into custody at about three p.m. on a motion to revoke probation violation warrant from Riley County, with aggravated burglary listed as the original offense. Beal’s bond was set at $50,000.
