Tuesday night, multiple first response teams from all over Riley, Geary, and Pottawatomie Counties took part in a cooperative simulation near Manhattan Regional Airport. The simulation included a downed aircraft with “victims”, both living actors and dummies as fatalities, that were strewn across a field. Response teams were tasked to search, assess, and triage victims. Riley County EMS Director Pat Collins was a main facilitator of the simulation. A-44 year-old man who has served more than half of his life in prison has been released on parole.  John Moss had been serving time since a 1990 second degree murder case in Riley County.Moss had a public comment session and parole hearing earlier this year, and Kansas Department of Corrections records indicate he was paroled in-state on August 13th.   Moss was sentenced in July of 1990 and most recently had been held in the Hutchinson Central Correctional Facility. His current location is listed as Reno County.

From 3,000 square feet to 9,000 square feet, the K-State Super Store offers additional K-State apparel options and has resulted in the addition of 30 new employees. Although the store opened earlier this month, the official ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday morning. Opening statements took place in Riley Court on Tuesday morning for the Trial of Christopher Bates. Bates is facing 6 counts of criminal conduct including indecent liberties, rape, and sodomy of a child under 14 years of age.  Riley County district attorney Barry Wilkerson indicated in his opening statement that the evidence will show how Bates used his friendship with the father of two female victims to engage in inappropriate acts with the children.  According to the prosecution Bates engaged in criminal acts against a 12-year-old victim, hereon known as Victim A, after a late night party at the victim’s…

The USD 320 Board of Education wants the public to know there is a confirmed outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) in the area. At Monday’s meeting, West Elementary Principal, Amy Flinn said there was a confirmed case at West, and added the County Health Department said there are 80 confirmed cases in the Wamego/St. Mary’s area. She said all parents and staff have been notified and should take steps to be immunized. After several weeks of trying to find a replacement for a position vacated by outgoing Riley County USD 378 School board member, Dan Thomson, current board members Monday night approved a replacement board member to fill the vacant position. Tom Richard was selected to fill the vacancy. Thomson resigned from the board due to the district’s nepotism policy, with the recent hiring of his wife in the district.
