The Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning Organization has been hard at work planning the traffic scenarios for the Flint Hills Region through 2040. The transportation plan consists of several steps, which according to MPO Transportation Planner, Stephanie Watts, the organization has recently finished establishing future conditions and prioritizing projects. She said the plan is expected for completion and adoption by December of this year. As body-worn cameras continue to be implemented by Riley County Police, more cameras are necessary for officers who are on duty. A public hearing was held during Thursday’s county commission meeting to discuss the Edward Bryne Memorial Justice Assistant Grant, which would provide funding for additional cameras. According to RCPD Director, Brad Schoen, the amount of funding would be around $17,000. After closing the public hearing, the commission unanimously chose to approve to move forward with the grant. A Wichita man, convicted of methamphetamine charges, appeared in Pottawatomie County Court Thursday morning. Joseph Swarts was arrested back in July at the Quality Inn, along with other individuals, for possession of meth and drug paraphernalia. Swarts received an underlying sentence of 30 months, or two and a half years, with the Department of Corrections, but was granted probation. The court also imposed costs and ordered him to complete a drug treatment program.
