“The burning is about done for the year”.  This statement was made by Riley County Fire Chief, Pat Collins during Monday’s county commission meeting. Collins reported that his crews did not have any calls in reference to pasture burning on Saturday or Sunday, which hasn’t happened in several weeks. An initial appearance has now been scheduled for a 20-year-old Topeka man who was indicted last week with trying to carry out a suicide attack at Fort Riley. Defendant John T. Booker, Jr., is set for a  9:30 a.m. appearance Tuesday in the federal courthouse in Kansas City, Kan. The hearing’s purpose is to inform the defendant of the charges in the grand jury indictment returned last week. A General Order regarding body-worn cameras was approved by the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency at its Law Board meeting Monday. Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen reminded the group there are two vastly different opinions about how much should be recorded by law enforcement officers, from those who believe cops should record everything they do to the opposite or more civil libertarian view. As KMAN has previously reported, a work site accident took place Monday morning shortly after 10:30 at the construction site of the new KSU Foundation building and K-State Office Park, located at 1800 Kimball Ave.An employee of the steel erection subcontractor, Ferco, was injured and transported for medical treatment. In an effort to accurately assess the health and wellness needs of Pottawatomie County, Health Director Leslie Campbell enlisted the help of Project Coordinator for the Riley County Senior Service Center Debbie Nuss and Konza United Way to survey local residents on a variety of quality-of-life issues. A Manhattan man currently facing three felony level charges appeared in Riley County District Court Monday afternoon for his arraignment . Christopher Hudgins stood alongside his attorney, Thomas Addair, who stated he was still in negotiations on the matter to get it worked out.  Chief Judge Meryl Wilson chose to move the arraignment date further down the road in order to allow for additional time to reach a plea agreement. A 33-year-old Leonardville man faces a variety of drug-related charges following his arrest Saturday morning. According to Monday’s Riley County Police activity report, Bryce Williams was taken into custody at the intersection of Bala Road and Jenkins Road in Riley County. The arrest took place at approximately 3:15 AM Saturday. Williams’ charges include possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.   Police in Riley County will be participating in a traffic enforcement project on April 21, 2015 as well as April 23rd and April 28th. This enforcement project will be focused around the Riley County High School area in northern Riley County. RCPD will join other Kansas law enforcement agencies around the state in this project. In 2014, 34 teens in Kansas lost their lives due to car crashes; 63% of those teens were not properly restrained.
