KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)– The Royals and A’s picked up right where they left off. On Friday night, it nearly turned into punches. In their first meeting since last September’s dramatic wild-card game, Paulo Orlando delivered a go-ahead triple in the eighth inning to help Kansas City to a 6-4 win. The victory nearly came at a big loss for the Royals when shortstop Alcides Escobar was run over by the Athletics’ Brett Lawrie covering second base. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A man wounded during an attempted home break-in has gotten an invitation to worship with the pastor who shot him. The Sedgwick County prosecutor’s office said the pastor provides assistance to men with alcohol and drug addiction. During a sentencing hearing Friday, the pastor invited 30-year-old Corey Burgardt, of Wichita, to attend his church. Burgardt previously pleaded guilty to a felony count of criminal damage to property and a misdemeanor count of criminal trespass. A vehicle fire that broke out shortly after noon on Friday in the Westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the Riley/Geary County line shut down those lanes for approximately one hour on Friday afternoon. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is unknown but traffic was backed up for at least four miles as crews extinguished the fire and performed cleanup operations. The fire occurred at Mile Marker 316.

Malek Harris is the latest player to be dismissed from the K-State men’s basketball team. K-State announced Friday that Harris joins Marcus Foster and Tre Harris as Wildcats to be kicked off this offseason. Harris averaged two points and two rebounds per game this season and is a former four-star recruit. He was the highest ranked recruit Bruce Weber has had at K-State. “We have high standards for the players in our program.,” Weber said. “Unfortunately Malek could not live up to those expectations. Unemployment numbers are up a little in the Manhattan area, according to estimates just released by the Kansas Department of Labor, but are still the lowest in the state. The Manhattan metro area, which includes Riley and Pottawatomie Counties, has a 3.6% rate for March, compared to 3.5% in February but still much lower than last March’s 4.2%. The City of Manhattan, Riley County part, was 3.2%, also up slightly from 3.1 in February. The Manhattan-Junction City Combined Statistical Area showed a 4.1% rate, which was steady with February numbers and lower than last year’s 4.9% in March of 2014.…
