A head-on collision late Monday afternoon killed one person and injured another on U.S. Highway 77 approximately two miles north of Randolph. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol which investigated the crash, at approximately 4:40 p.m. a 1994 Pontiac Firebird driven by 32-year old Steven Farnsworth of Riley was traveling southbound on Highway 77 at mile post 196.5 when for an unknown reason it went left of center and collided head-on with a 2003 Dodge Ram Pickup driven by 19-year old Megan Ewell of Randolph. Two new department heads were introduced during Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting. New Treasurer, Shilo Heger was sworn in before the commission meeting began, and was congratulated during the meeting’s press conference. New IT/GIS Director, Kevin Howser was also acknowledged during the press conference. Howser is a native of Missouri, but has been living in Silver Lake for the last nine years. Howser said he intends to commute until his family can make the switch to Riley County. Howser has had various roles throughout his 30 years in information technology, most recently as the IT Director of Lawrence Memorial Hospital.…

Beginning Monday, the Casement Road and Marlatt Avenue intersection will be closed to thru traffic. The closure will begin after 3 p.m. and will extend from the intersection to Silo Place. Access to Brookglen Street from Casement will be closed but should reopen by Aug. 10. Drivers should follow the designated detour route, and if alternate routes can be taken, the City encourages motorists to seek them in order to avoid delays on this roadway segment. KMAN received this press release from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism just before noon on Monday: Anthony Bernard Strange, Jr. (21) of Topeka, drowned Saturday evening while attempting to swim across Deep Creek at the Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area east of Manhattan. An autopsy will be conducted, but alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the tragedy.
