WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Kansas farmers have begun planting this year’s corn amid growing concern for the deteriorating winter wheat crop in several counties where it is dry. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 6 percent of the corn crop has now been planted in Kansas. But the agency also noted that topsoil moisture conditions for the week ending on Sunday are short to very short across 57 percent of the state. WAMEGO, Kan. (AP) With few trees in large swaths of Kansas prairieland, early settlers built fences out of stone instead. People interesting in learning more about how those fences were built will get a chance this spring during a festival in Wamego. Riley County’s efforts in replacing their 911 radio system, which began a decade ago, continue to move forward-as an emergency radio consultant visited the county commission during their meeting on Monday. Tusa Consulting is credited with providing radio communications services to different departments and organizations throughout the nation. They recently developed an $80 million radio system for the Kansas City metro area. It included five counties, two states, 24 dispatch centers and 25,000 users. A Manhattan woman, who previously owned a daycare center, is facing charges of aggravated battery and endangering a child under 18 after an incident that occurred in April of last year. Lesa Heiman appeared in Riley County District Court Monday afternoon, alongside her attorney, Nicholas Heiman. In an effort to increase emergency preparedness in the area, Emergency Management Director for Pottawatomie County Chris Trudo presented at the County Commissioner meeting on Monday, April 6.
