A Manhattan man asked for a reduction in bond during a Riley County Court appearance Monday afternoon, telling the judge he’s “done a lot of thinking” during his time in jail and is “really ready to give up drugs.” Trey Campbell, who faces charges in connection with an alleged incident involving stolen marijuana last July, appeared in court alongside his attorney Jillian Waesche, who also told Judge David Stutzman that Campbell is expecting his first child soon, and wants to be with the mother who reportedly has medical problems. And Campbell added he hopes to live with his mother in town, to assist with his 14-year-old sister while his mother attends classes at Washburn University. He also talked of attending church and AA meetings since he’s been in jail.
Senior Deputy County Attorney for Riley County, Barry Disney, opposed the reduction, adding the stressors of an upcoming trial and new child is in his words a “recipe for disaster.”
After further discussion, Judge Stutzman talked about reducing the current bond of $100,000 to $37,500 with additional conditions which would include random drug testing. He told Campbell the new child doesn’t need a father using methamphetamine, which is the same for the sister and the mother. Campbell’s bond was raised to $100,000 about a month ago when he violated probation in a separate misdemeanor case and tested positive for meth.
Judge Stutzman stressed it is not his job to “do favors” and that this would not be a favor, just an assessment on his part to evaluate Campbell and assess where they are prior to Campbell’s April 23rd trial.
The Judge asked Waesche to submit an order to modify the bond and he would check on a drug testing regimen.
Campbell’s next court appearance is next Monday (April 13) at 9 a.m.
Another individual charged in connection with the case is Ty Suggs, whose next court appearance is set for May 11. Suggs waived his right to a preliminary hearing in February.
As KMAN first reported in early December, Campbell and Suggs were arrested in connection with a July case involving a robbery at gunpoint and a reported half-pound of marijuana.
