Shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 1517 Houston Street for a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found a one-story residential structure with heavy smoke and fire showing from the rear of the structure. The fire was contained within 20 minutes with a first alarm assignment. A total of 17 firefighters responded on 6 fire apparatus. No occupants were home at the time of the fire. (AP) Some lawmakers and state officials are ramping up the pressure against a Wichita ballot initiative that seeks to ease penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana. But supporters of the measure are also pushing back after crashing their news conference Friday in front of the Sedgwick County courthouse. A Kansas Department of Corrections inmate with ties to Geary County is due for a public comment session and possible parole. Gilbert Mason (63) was charged with Kidnapping in 2005 and has been serving time at the El Dorado Correctional Facility in Dickinson County. Mason was also arrested in Geary County in December of 1974 and charged with with aggravated burglary, robbery and kidnapping. Public comment sessions are set for Mason’s case and several others on June 17th in Derby, June 19th at the municipal court house in Topeka and June 22nd at City Hall in Kansas City. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Sunflower CASA Project in Manhattan is partaking in a “Pass the Pinwheel” social media campaign to help raise awareness for the cause. After one of the most decorated careers in school history, Manhattan High’s Caroline Ballard signed her letter of intent to play girls basketball at Washington University in St. Louis on Friday. Washington has one of the most accomplished college basketball coaches around in Nancy Fahey. Fahey is the only division three coach to win five national championships. A Manhattan man accused of brandishing a gun and stealing a pick-up truck this past October has waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Benjamin Abrams, 33, appeared in front of Judge Sheila Hochhauser on Friday, April 3 in connection to the aggravated robbery incident. Following his decision to waive the hearing, Judge Hochhauser set Abrams’ next court date for Monday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m.

Police in Riley County arrived at a vehicle collision in the 5000 block of Fort Riley Boulevard and found that a 1993 Mercury passenger car driven by Peter Savary, 52, of Manhattan collided with a concrete highway divider. This collision reportedly occurred immediately after Savary was cut off by an unknown vehicle traveling westbound on Fort Riley Boulevard. Savary indicates he then lost control of his vehicle resulting in a crash. Riley County EMS arrived and transported Savary to Mercy Regional Health Center for complaint of head pain.
